  • 1974: Ric Flair moved to Charlotte to work for booker Wahoo McDaniel in the Mid Atlantic territory.
  • Ric Flair turned his hair blond, wore very colorful trunks, and adopted his now famous "Nature Boy" personality and image.
  • Flair later became known for the figure four, he won most of his early matches with an elbowdrop, or with a top-rope kneedrop.
  • May 17, 1974 - Mid Atlantic: Ric Flair defeated Les Thatcher (This was one of Flair's first matches in the territory)..
  • "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair defeated Paul Jones to win his first singles title, the NWA Mid Atlantic Television title.

  • January 27, 1981: Rowdy Roddy Piper defeated Ric Flair to win the NWA United States Title.
  • ~~~Roddy Piper was already the Television champion, and he used a foreign object to win the match and another title!
  • ~~~Piper insulted Flair by trying to give him the TV belt in a gift box (Flair showed up with the foreign object and swore revenge)
  • ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~In reality, Roddy Piper had befriended Ric Flair, and he was the best man at Flair's wedding.
  • For the next several months, Flair fought off Piper and his hired goons; Greg Valentine, Ivan Koloff, and The Andersons.

  • September 17, 1981: Ric Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes to win the NWA World Heavyweight title in Kansas City, Missouri.

    NWA: Ric Flair vs. The Midnight Rider (Dusty Rhodes):
  • February 9, 1983: The Midnight Rider (a suspended Dusty Rhodes under a mask) defeated Ric Flair to win the NWA World title..
  • ~~~When the President of the NWA told the Midnight Rider to remove the mask, the title was promptly returned to Ric Flair.

    NWA: Ric Flair vs. Harley Race:
  • June 8, 1983: Handsome Harley Race defeated Ric Flair to win the NWA World Title in St. Louis, Missouri.
  • ~~~Harley Race then offered a bounty to anyone who could eliminate Ric Flair from the wrestling world..
  • ~~~During a rematch, Ric Flair was attacked by his "best friend" Bob Orton Jr. and Dirty Dick Slater
  • ~~~Ric Flair announced that injuries from the attack would unfortunately force him into retirement..
  • ~~~Ric Flair soon changed his mind and attacked Dick Slater & Bob Orton Jr. with a baseball bat!
  • November 24, 1983--Starrcade: Ric Flair defeated Harley Race in a Cage Match to win the NWA World Heavyweight Title ..

  • ~~~The guest referee was former NWA World Heavyweight champion and Canada's greatest athlete, Gene Kiniski..
  • March 21, 1984: Harley Race once again defeated Ric Flair to regain the NWA World Heavyweight title in New Zealand.
  • March 23, 1984: Ric Flair defeated Harley Race to capture his 3rd NWA World Heavyweight title in Singapore.

  • June 30, 1984--Lords Of The Ring: Dusty Rhodes defeated Ric Flair in a Non-title match to win a ceremonial ring.
  • November 22, 1984--Starrcade: Ric Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes to retain the NWA World Heavyweight Title..
  • ~~~The match was stopped by referee Joe Frazier and awarded to Ric Flair due to Dusty Rhodes excessive bleeding..

    Jim Crockett's World Champion - Ric Flair vs. Nikita Koloff:
  • 1985: Ric Flair was primarily wrestling for Jim Crockett's Mid-Atlantic promotion out of the Carolinas..
  • ~~~Mid Atlantic would combine with the Georgia territory to form World Championship Wrestling later in the year..
  • Depending on his opponent and the town, champion Ric Flair would appear to be a fan-favorite or a rulebreaker...
  • Summer 1985: Ric Flair engaged in a feud against Ivan Koloff and Nikita Koloff..
  • ~~~The Russians used a chain to attack Flair ~~~ Nikita Koloff even attacked announcer David Crockett ..
  • July 1985--Great American Bash: Ric Flair defeated Nikita Koloff with David Crockett as guest referee,

    The Horsemen before they were The Horsemen (Ric Flair vs. Magnum TA):
  • Ric Flair feuded with NWA United States champion Magnum TA (Terry Allen)..
  • ~~~"The Nature Boy" Ric Flair lured Magnum TA into the ring and then humiliated him with a vicious beating..
  • ~~~A week later, Ric Flair insulted Magnum by offering him a new suit, so he could "look like a champion"..
  • ~~~Magnum TA tore the suit to shreds and knocked Ric Flair out with a belly-to-belly suplex..
  • ~~~Ric Flair challenged Magnum TA to last ten minutes in a match with him..
  • ~~~When Magnum lasted the full ten minutes, he was attacked by Ole & Arn Anderson, who claimed to be Flair's cousins..
  • September 29, 1985: The Nature Boy, Ric Flair finally turned heel in Atlanta, Georgia..
  • ~~~Ric Flair had finished defeating Nikita Koloff in a Steel Cage match, but he was attacked by the Russians!
  • ~~~Dusty Rhodes entered the steel cage and rescued Ric Flair, who seemed angry about the save from Rhodes..
  • ~~~Ole & Arn Anderson then locked themselves in the steel cage and helped Flair demolish Dusty Rhodes' ankle..
  • ~~~In an interview not long after this, Ric Flair hinted at a partnership with Magnum's arch-enemy, Tully Blanchard..
  • October 2, 1985: Ric Flair wrestled to a double count-out against AWA World champion Rick Martel on in Tokyo, JAPAN.
  • November 28, 1985--Starrcade: Ric Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes in the main event to retain the NWA World Heavyweight title..
  • ~~~The referee was knocked to the outside of the ring, so The Andersons quickly interfered and assisted Ric Flair..
  • ~~~Dusty Rhodes gained a pinfall when a new referee arrived, and was announced as the new NWA World champion!
  • ~~~The following week, it was announced that Flair was DQ'd by the original referee, so the title was returned to Ric Flair ..
  • Ric Flair formed a formal alliance with The Andersons, Tully Blanchard, and Blanchard's manager, James J Dillon
  • Ole Anderson was injured on New Year's Day. As a result, Arn, Blanchard, and Flair became known as the 3 Horsemen for a few months..
  • Ric Flair had some close matches against Ricky Morton, so the Horsemen attacked him and ground his face into the locker room floor..
  • Ole Anderson made a comeback in June of 1986, officially forming The Four Horsemen (and the rest is history)..

    The IV Horsemen Years: Ric Flair vs. Dusty Rhodes & Nikita Koloff:
  • Ric Flair agreed to defend the NWA World Title over a dozen times while on the Great American Bash Tour..
  • Challengers; Wahoo McDaniel, Dusty Rhodes, Nikita Koloff, Ron Garvin, Ricky Morton, Robert Gibson, Hawk, & Animal.
  • February 2, 1986--MoscaMania: Ric Flair defeated "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes in Hamilton, Ontario..
  • July 25, 1986: Dusty Rhodes defeated Ric Flair in a Greensboro Cage match to win the NWA World Heavyweight title.
  • August 9, 1986: Ric Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes to regain the NWA World Heavyweight title in St. Louis, Missouri.
  • ~~~Horsemen member Tully Blanchard had injured Dusty Rhodes' knee with a chairshot just two nights earlier.
  • ~~~Instead of getting pinned, Rhodes lost the title when he blacked out while in the figure-four leglock.

  • July 4, 1987--Great American Bash: Ric Flair led the Horsemen into the first ever War Games match..
  • ~~~Dusty Rhodes & Nikita Koloff & The Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal) & Paul Ellering defeated The IV Horsemen & JJ Dillon

  • November 26, 1987--Starrcade: Ric Flair defeated Ron Garvin to regain the NWA World Heavyweight title.

    The IV Horsemen Years: Ric Flair vs. Lex Luger & Sting:
  • December 1987: Lex Luger left the Horsemen and began to seek Ric Flair's title. Sting became another new challenger.
  • March 27, 1988--NWA Clash of Champions: NWA World champion Ric Flair w/JJ Dillon vs. Sting ended in a 1-hour draw
  • A few weeks later, Barry Windham turned heel and took Lex Luger's spot in the IV Horsemen w/JJ Dillon...
  • Soon, all four Horsemen were champions; Barry Windham (U.S. Title) and Anderson & Blanchard (Tag Team Titles)..
  • July 10, 1988--Great American Bash: Ric Flair defeated Lex Luger by a controversial referee's decision ..
