New York City has become ROH's hottest market, with some of the rowdiest fans in the country, every show is blessed with a jacked up atmosphere. The show started with the Briscoe Brothers easily defeating the team of Jason Blade and Sterling James Keenan (a top name from the International Wrestling Cartel out of Pennsylvania). The Briscoes are starting at the bottom and working their way back up the ladder looking for another shot at the ROH World Tag Team titles ( 5 / 10 ).
Jimmy Rave was looking to get revenge after an embarrassing loss at the previous ROH event to the debuting Davey Richards. During the pre-match toilet paper shower scene, some jackass threw glass into the ring and it broke. Both wrestlers suffered lacerations to their backs while battling in this heated grudge match. In fact, Jimmy Jacobs was cut but the same glass later on. You know what they say, it only takes one bad apple. Davey Richards picked up his second straight victory over Jimmy Rave and continued to live up to his heavily hyped reputation. Thumbs up for Davey Richards! ( 7 / 10 ).
It looked as though Nigel McGuinness had finally turned full-fledged babyface as he chose Colt Cabana to be his partner to go up against ROH Tag Team Champions Austin Aries and Roderick Strong. It was a very impressive match, with all men sharing great chemistry together. Roderick Strong made Nigel McGuinness tap out to the Stronghold to win the match and retain the belts for he and Aries. Nigel McGuinness got all his heat back after the match by only slapping hands with the winners and then giving them both the middle finger! ( 7 / 10 ). They are building Nigel McGuinness up for a shot at the ROH World title where he will most certainly end up being the crowd favorite against American Dragon.
The grudge match was on, as Jimmy Jacobs returned to Ring of Honor to defend the honor of his pretend girlfriend, Lacey. He also wanted to get back at BJ Whitmer for nearly ending his life with a botched top rope power-bomb back at Dragon Gate Invasion. They fought hard for several minutes before the match was stopped after dramatic power-bomb by Whitmer onto Jacobs off the top rope and into the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rows taking out several "planted" fans in the process. They tried desperately to top thier previous "accident" with a planned stunt which turned out good, but not better. It was ruled a No Contest but I give my deepest appreciation to both men for their great efforts and willingness to put their bodies on the line for fans ( 7.5 / 10 ).
Shane Hagadorn continues to improve with a victory over the tiny Mitch Franklin. Hagadorn should be out circling the country getting experience anywhere he can, but God bless Franklin for trying his best. He is doomed to a career full of "but he's got a lot of heart!" -- He's following his dream. ( 3.5 / 10 ).
Lt. Commissioner Adam Pearce hit the ring and called out Claudio Castagnoli for a little tune-up match moving towards the big CZW vs ROH Cage of Death match at Death Before Dishonor 4 on 7/15. They had a pretty decent match going with a lot of great action but it all came crashing down when Chris Hero interfered and got Castagnoli disqualified. ( 7 / 10 ) Leading to...........
Homicide hit the ring and squared off with Chris Hero in an impromptu match that went back and forth and had the fans yelling and screaming at the top of their lungs. Hero has his character perfected. Homicide won the match after a stiff Lariat that took Hero's head off! ( 8.5 / 10 ) The ROH students came out and dragged Hero away as Homicide got a chair and sat in the ring with a microphone. Homicide bypassed Jim Cornette and demanded that Gabe Sapolsky and Cary Silken (ROH owners) give him another ROH World title shot or else he would QUIT and go somewhere else!
The main event was the inspiration for the title of this DVD: "In Your Face." It was a triple threat match between ROH World Champion American Dragon, ROH/TNA star Samoa Joe, and Japanese wrestling star KENTA. Lots of unique altercations before and after the match but the bell-to-bell action was intense and painful. KENTA, who is officially an ROH regular now, won the match after his famous Go-To-Sleep finisher -- basically a fireman's carry dropped down into a knee-smash to the head (ouch!). Another main event home-run for Ring of Honor ( 9 / 10 ).
Final Thoughts: There is some bonus features on this DVD including a match from Full Impact Pro between Jay Fury & Jerrelle Clark and Chasyn Rance & Seth Delay. FIP is the baby sister promotion of ROH and while it is not as intense as ROH shows it does feature many of the same wrestlers. You can check out FIP DVD reviews by clicking here.
