STRAIGHT FROM THE MAT – GLOBAL NEWSWIRE
<> WRESTLING GLOBAL FIRST TO THE BIG STORIES:

Perhaps the greatest wrestler in the history of the business announced his retirement plans this afternoon. Ric Flair said he will hang up his boots next year during a press conference in Dover, DE, at the NASCAR Busch Series. He cited that he wanted to spend more time with his family: “I’ve earned the right to retire on my own terms, but I don’t see myself as bigger than the WWE. If it works into a storyline that works with the program, then I’m happy with it. If not, we just walk away one day and say goodbye.” On how he would like to walk away:

“If I could write that script, I would just say that I would be in a marquee position…I would like to wrestle a marquee guy, a big name, in my last match. Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Undertaker, John Cena…I would love to wrestle in a marquee position in a marquee match and just have my finest hour.”

<> As it stands right now I would expect Flair’s final match to come at Wrestlemania 24. Sources have indicated that Flair’s final run would be built around him chasing a world title and his induction into the WWE Hall of Fame.

<> We’re looking for match results and any interesting notes from all the WWE house shows this weekend starting with Raw tonight in Champaign, IL, Fort Wayne on Sunday, and Monday’s live Raw  in Milwaukee with Triple H vs. Carlito in a cage match.
Smackdown/ECW runs tonight in St. Joseph, MO, Sunday in Columbia, MO, Monday night in Springfield, IL and the TV tapings are Tuesday night in Indianapolis with the aftermath following Theodore Long’s “heart attack”.

<> 9/21 Smackdown TV results: Jimmy Wang Yang over Jamie Noble, Deuce n’ Domino over Matt Hardy & MVP, and Mark Henry vs. Batista was a double count out.

<> Newsday has a story on the letter that the WWE sent out to past wrestlers offering to pay for drug or alcohol rehab. The story notes that the letter was sent out to over 500 people and quotes WWE attorney Jerry McDevitt as saying: “The decision to do so was made by Vince as a humanitarian gesture, period. It is not intended to be, nor is it … an acknowledgment of responsibility for the substance problems of anybody.” The story also has quotes from Chris “Kanyon” Klucsarits saying that the move is a big turn around from Vince McMahon’s stance from not talking about drugs in wrestling. <> The Miami Herlad reports that Steve Austin “threatened to get physical with staff” after he was refused entrance to the Soul Kitchen at The Forge last Sunday because he was wearing shorts. The Herald said the restaurant eventually gave him a pair of pants and let him in to enjoy his night.

<> Stacey Keibler in an interesting commercial:

<> Joanie “Chyna” Laurer is to be part of a new VH1 reality show called Celebrity Rehab which premieres on 10/1. Other “celebrities”
on the show include: porn star Mary Carey, weird ‘comic’ Andy Dick, the even more weird Brigitte Nielsen, American Idol reject Jessica Sierra and actor Tom Sizemore.

<> TNA are holding tryouts for wrestlers on 10/29 at Universal Studios in Orlando, FL. More info online at www.tnawrestling.com

<> A number of UK readers have told us that fans can order WWE No Mercy, Survivor Series and Armageddon on Sky Box Office for a special price of £29.90. Basically three events for the price of two.
<> Autograph Signings: Greg “The Hammer” Valentine will be appearing this afternoon at the Orlando Comic Con, Test on Sunday at The Summit Mall in Niagara Falls, NY, and Christy Hemme and Samoa at Bookends in Ridgewood, NJ, from 12 Noon.

<> Judging by the feedback we’ve received we will defintely be bring back Diva of the Day. Apparently there a few of you out there who feel we are being slightly sexiest… so here is something just for the ladies: http://tinyurl.com/29q7nr
