#1 Team Proving Ground Pro (Team IOU @TeamIOU & Jake Dirden @PGPWrestling)-FIP’s Fallout Tournament was discussed on our Tag Team Top 5 Reveal last week and we pretty much said that whoever won that tournament almost had a guaranteed #1 ranking this week. Well, that came to fruition in almost a complete sweep of the voters. The official voters ALL voted for Team PGP at #1 while the fans almost got them to #1 in the online voting competition with 106 votes. That being said, this team was 4-0 over the weekend and scored some huge wins along the way in the tournament. First, they defeated Team ACW (Jason Cade, Jayson Falcone & Sideshow) at FIP in the first round on 10/23, then defeated Team Maryland Championship Wrestling (Lio Rush, Ken Dixon, and Joey Keys) in the second round on 10/24, then defeated Team Freelance Wrestling (Isaias Velasquez, Matt Knicks, and Chris Castro) in the semifinals the same night, and then defeated Team Tier 1 Wrestling (Sonny Kiss, Rude Boy Riley, and Alex Mason) in the final the same night. Team IOU are known for racking up rankings but with Jake Dirden on their side, you may see Team IOU TWICE in the year-end Tag Team Top 50.
#2 The Heatseekers (Sigmon & Elliott Russell)-For the second time this team gets a #2 ranking and honestly, on any other week (literally any other week just about) they would have been #1. The NWA World Tag Team Champions added more gold to their collection as they won the AML Tag Team Titles in the Cornette Cup over the weekend. They won the Gauntlet Style Tournament by first beating Nuclear Kaasarole, then American Wolves, and then the Washington Bullets. This team beat some of the best tag teams on the indies to win these titles and we have to tip our caps to one of the truly underappreciated tag teams on the indies as they continue their push towards this year’s Tag Team Top 50.
#3 Monster Express (Masato Yoshino & T-Hawk)-Same stable. Different combination. That’s pretty much been the entire 2015 for the Monster Express stable in Dragon Gate. This duo defeated VerserK (Naruki Doi and Kotoka) at Dragon Gate on 10/19, then defeated Jimmyz (Jimmy Susumu and Genki Horiguchi H.A.Gee.Mee!!) on 10/22, then teamed with Drastik Boy on 10/24 to defeat Jimmyz ( Jimmy Susumu, Ryo “Jimmy” Saito and Genki Horiguchi H.A.Gee.Mee!!) and then defeated Jimmyz (Ryo “Jimmy” Saito and Genki Horiguchi H.A.Gee.Mee!!) on 10/25 to go 4-0 for the week. With 6 straight victories as a team, can this combination push their way into the Tag Team Top 50 to go along with all the other potential combinations from Monster Express? Not much time left to make that big push!
#4 Team Tier 1 Wrestling (Alex Mason, Rude Boy Riley, & Sonny Kiss)-Despite falling short in the Finals, the official voters showed a tremendous amount of respect to the runner-ups of the FIP Fallout Tournament over the weekend. They even beat arguably better teams along the way than Team PGP. Check it out: They defeated Team PWX (Corey Hollis, Ethan Case & John Skyler) at FIP on 10/23 in the first round, then defeated Submission Squad (Gary Jay, Evan Gelistico, and Austin Blackburn) on 10/24 in the second round, then defeated Viking War Party (Alexander Rudolph, Frank Wyatt, and Jake Parnell) in the semifinals, and then lost to Team Proving Ground Pro (Jake Dirden, Nick Iggy, and Kerry Awful) in the final to go 3-1 for the week. Any of their 3 victories could be considered an upset, but they still continued to press on and earned a ranking from their fantastic showing.
#5 Snake Pit (Shynron & Ophidian)-This CHIKARA pair makes a splash in the Top 5 as they teamed with Eddie Kingston at CHIKARA on 10/22 to defeat The United Nations (Juan Francisco de Coronado, Prakash Sabar & The Proletariat Boar Of Moldova) and then defeated The Gentleman’s Club (Drew Gulak & Orange Cassidy) on 10/24 to go 2-0 for the week. Pretty impressive wins earn them a ranking. With CHIKARA being similar to Dragon Gate in that tags are so important, can this team find their way into the Tag Team Top 50 at the end of the year?
People’s Champs. Better Men (AC Riley & Mario Andrew Crivello)-Gotta give it up to this tag team and to the area in which they wrestle. This isn’t the first time that the Wisconsin area has done well in the online voting competition and it likely won’t be the last. This team earned their way onto the poll by defeating Chase McCoy (1/2 of Insane Evil) in a Handicap Match to win the ICW Tag Team Titles on 10/24. While the victory isn’t as strong as some of the others on our list, their showing in the online voting competition was as they earned 136 votes to become this week’s People’s Champs.
