Career Highlights

In the Beginning:

  • February 25, 1949: Richard Fliehr was born in Memphis, Tennessee.
  • 1967: Richard Fleihr was a high school state heavyweight wrestling champion in Wisconsin.
  • Richard Fleihr moved to Edina, Minnesota, where he grew up and went on to play offensive guard in college at Minnesota.

Getting into the Business – AWA:

  • 1971: Ric Flair recieved his training from the legendary Verne Gagne and debuted in professional wrestling in the AWA in 1972.
  • ~~~Ric Flair battled George “Scrap Iron” Gadaski to a 10-minute draw in his 1972 pro debut for the AWA.
  • Ric Flair left the American Wrestling Association, after about two years in the company and headed for the NWA.

NWA: Mid Atlantic Wrestling:

  • 1974: Ric Flair moved to Charlotte to work for booker Wahoo McDaniel in the Mid Atlantic territory.
  • Ric Flair turned his hair blond, wore very colorful trunks, and adopted his now famous “Nature Boy” personality and image.
  • Flair later became known for the figure four, he won most of his early matches with an elbowdrop, or with a top-rope kneedrop.
  • May 17, 1974 – Mid Atlantic: Ric Flair defeated Les Thatcher (This was one of Flair’s first matches in the territory).
  • “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair defeated Paul Jones to win his first singles title, the NWA Mid Atlantic Television title.
  • October 4, 1975: Ric Flair was in a plane crash with Johnny Valentine, Bob Bruggers and “Mr. Wrestling” Tim Woods.
  • ~~~Ric Flair broke his back in three places. Modern medical science said that he’d never wrestle again.

NWA: Mid Atlantic Wrestling (Return) – Ric Flair and Greg Valentine:

  • Instead of thanking the fans, Ric Flair tore up several “get well” cards on Mid-Atlantic Television.
  • January 1976: Ric Flair came back to professional wrestling and continued his feud with Wahoo McDaniel.
  • November 1976: Ric Flair began teaming regularly with Greg “The Hammer” Valentine and had a feud against Ole and Gene Anderson.
  • December 1976: Ric Flair and Greg Valentine defeated The Andersons for the NWA World Tag Team titles.
  • May 1977: Ole and Gene Anderson defeated Ric Flair and Greg Valentine to recapture the NWA World Tag Team titles.

NWA: Mid Atlantic Wrestling – Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat:

  • Summer 1977: Ric Flair had a feud against newcomer Ricky Steamboat, which saw Steamboat beat him for the TV Title.
  • Ric Flair’s allies were Valentine and Blackjack Mulligan, and they feuded against McDaniel, Steamboat, Paul Jones, and Andersons.
  • July 1977: Ric Flair defeated Bobo Brazil to win his first NWA United States Title.
  • ~~~There were hints of dissension between Ric Flair and former U.S. champion Blackjack Mulligan.
  • ~~~Before they could wrestle each other, Ric Flair lost this belt to Ricky Steamboat in October 1977.

NWA: Mid Atlantic Wrestling (Return) – Ric Flair and Greg Valentine:

  • October 1977: Ric Flair and Greg Valentine defeated the Anderson’s to reclaim the NWA World Tag Team titles.
  • April of 1978: Ric Flair and Greg Valentine were stripped of the NWA World Tag Team titles.

NWA: Mid Atlantic Wrestling – Ric Flair vs. Blackjack Mulligan:

  • April 9, 1978: Ric Flair defeated Mr. Wrestling to capture his second NWA United States title .
  • ~~~Ric Flair’s disrespect caused Blackjack Mulligan to become a fan-favorite and chase after Flair.
  • ~~~Ric Flair destroyed Blackjack Mulligan’s cowboy hat, so Mulligan tore up one of Flair’s fancy robes.
  • ~~~After Ric Flair sent a series of bounty hunters after him. Blackjack Mulligan never defeated Ric Flair for the title.

NWA: Mid Atlantic Wrestling – Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat:

  • Fall 1978: “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair renewed his war against Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat.
  • ~~~Ric Flair attacked Ricky Steamboat and scrubbed his face across the studio floor.
  • ~~~A week later, Ricky Steamboat attacked a dressed-up Ric Flair and ripped his clothes off.
  • December 18, 1978 (Toronto): Ricky Steamboat defeated Ric Flair to capture the NWA United States title.
  • ~~~April 1, 1979: Ric Flair defeated Ricky Steamboat to regain the NWA United States Heavyweight title.

NWA: Mid Atlantic Wrestling (The face turn):

  • Spring 1979: Ric Flair had a falling out with heel Paul Jones, who had also betrayed Ricky Steamboat.
  • The dream team of Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat tried (but failed) to defeat Paul Jones and Baron Von Raschke for the Tag Titles.

NWA: Mid Atlantic Wrestling – Battle of the Nature Boys:

  • Summer 1979: “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair was attacked and insulted by the original “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers.
  • ~~~Buddy Rogers then became the manager of heels such as Jimmy Snuka, Big John Studd, and Ken Patera.
  • August 12, 1979: Ric Flair reunited with Blackjack Mulligan, and they beat Paul Jones and Baron von Raschke for the Tag Team titles
  • ~~~Ric Flair even vacated the NWA United States title to show his respect and allegiance to Blackjack Mulligan.

NWA: Mid Atlantic Wrestling – Ric Flair vs. Jimmy Snuka:

  • Ric Flair began chasing the new NWA United States champion Jimmy Snuka.
  • April 19, 1980: Ric Flair defeated Jimmy Snuka to capture the NWA United States title.
  • June 1980: Ric Flair agreed to team up with Greg Valentine against Jimmy Snuka and The Iron Sheik
  • ~~~Greg Valentine turned against Ric Flair during the match and broke Flair’s nose with a cane.

NWA: Mid Atlantic Wrestling – Ric Flair vs. Greg Valentine:

  • ~~~Weeks later, Ric Flair stripped Greg Valentine’s clothes on Mid-Atlantic Television.
  • July 26, 1980: Greg Valentine defeated Ric Flair to win the NWA United States Heavyweight title.
  • November 24, 1980: Ric Flair defeated Greg Valentine to win his 5th NWA United States Heavyweight title.

NWA: Mid Atlantic Wrestling – Ric Flair vs. Roddy Piper:

  • January 27, 1981: Rowdy Roddy Piper defeated Ric Flair to win the NWA United States Title.
  • ~~~Roddy Piper was already the Television champion, and he used a foreign object to win the match and another title!
  • ~~~Piper insulted Flair by trying to give him the TV belt in a gift box (Flair showed up with the foreign object and swore revenge)
  • ~~~In reality, Roddy Piper had befriended Ric Flair, and he was the best man at Flair’s wedding.
  • For the next several months, Flair fought off Piper and his hired goons; Greg Valentine, Ivan Koloff, and The Anderson’s.

NWA: Ric Flair becomes The Man :

NWA: Ric Flair vs. Kerry von Erich:

  • December 25, 1982 (Christmas Night Star Wars): Ric Flair was scheduled to defend the title against Kerry Von Erich in a steel cage.
  • ~~~Freebird Michael “PS” Hayes was a second referee inside the cage while Freebird Terry Gordy guarded the cage door.
  • ~~~Ric Flair kept arguing and shoving referee Michael Hayes, so Hayes started to help von Erich win the match.
  • ~~~Good guy Kerry von Erich refused to cheat, so he was attacked by the Freebirds (Michael Hayes and Terry Gordy).
  • ~~~This angle kicked off the years-long Freebirds-Von Erichs war that took place all over the Texas territory.

NWA: Ric Flair vs. The Midnight Rider (Dusty Rhodes):

  • February 9, 1983: The Midnight Rider (a suspended Dusty Rhodes under a mask) defeated Ric Flair to win the NWA World title.
  • ~~~When the President of the NWA told the Midnight Rider to remove the mask, the title was promptly returned to Ric Flair.

NWA: Ric Flair vs. Harley Race:

  • June 8, 1983: Handsome Harley Race defeated Ric Flair to win the NWA World Title in St. Louis, Missouri.
  • ~~~Harley Race then offered a bounty to anyone who could eliminate Ric Flair from the wrestling world.
  • ~~~During a rematch, Ric Flair was attacked by his “best friend” Bob Orton Jr. and Dirty Dick Slater
  • ~~~Ric Flair announced that injuries from the attack would unfortunately force him into retirement.
  • ~~~Ric Flair soon changed his mind and attacked Dick Slater and Bob Orton Jr. with a baseball bat!
  • November 24, 1983 – Starrcade: Ric Flair defeated Harley Race in a Cage Match to win the NWA World Heavyweight Title .
  • ~~~This was the first time the NWA World Heavyweight Title changed hands inside of a steel cage match
  • ~~~The guest referee was former NWA World Heavyweight champion and Canada’s greatest athlete, Gene Kiniski.
  • March 21, 1984: Harley Race once again defeated Ric Flair to regain the NWA World Heavyweight title in New Zealand.
  • March 23, 1984: Ric Flair defeated Harley Race to capture his 3rd NWA World Heavyweight title in Singapore.
  • ~~~Neither of these switches were recognized by the National Wrestling Alliance at the time.
  • Similar controversial “quick” switches, involving Jack Veneno, Victor Jovica, and Carlos Colon occurred a few other times.

NWA: Ric Flair vs. Kerry von Erich:

  • May 6, 1984: Kerry von Erich defeated Ric Flair to win the NWA World title in Irving, Texas.
  • ~~~This card was held in honor of David Von Erich who had passed away the previous February.
  • May 24, 1984: Ric Flair defeated Kerry von Erich to recapture the NWA World Heavyweight title in Japan.
  • “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair managed to keep the NWA World Heavyweight Title for over two years.
  • Challengers: Tully Blanchard, Ricky Steamboat, Wahoo McDaniel, Stan Hansen, Sergeant Slaughter, and Ron Garvin

NWA: Ric Flair vs. Dusty Rhodes:

  • June 30, 1984 – Lords Of The Ring: Dusty Rhodes defeated Ric Flair in a Non-title match to win a ceremonial ring.
  • November 22, 1984 – Starrcade: Ric Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes to retain the NWA World Heavyweight Title.
  • ~~~The match was stopped by referee Joe Frazier and awarded to Ric Flair due to Dusty Rhodes excessive bleeding.
  • ~~~The promotion claimed that the winner would win one million dollars..

Jim Crockett’s World champion – Ric Flair vs. Nikita Koloff:

  • 1985: Ric Flair was primarily wrestling for Jim Crockett’s Mid-Atlantic promotion out of the Carolinas.
  • ~~~Mid Atlantic would combine with the Georgia territory to form World championship Wrestling later in the year.
  • Depending on his opponent and the town, champion Ric Flair would appear to be a fan-favorite or a rulebreaker..
  • Summer 1985: Ric Flair engaged in a feud against Ivan Koloff and Nikita Koloff.
  • ~~~The Russians used a chain to attack Flair ~~~ Nikita Koloff even attacked announcer David Crockett .
  • July 1985 – Great American Bash: Ric Flair defeated Nikita Koloff with David Crockett as guest referee,

The Horsemen before they were The Horsemen (Ric Flair vs. Magnum TA):

  • Ric Flair feuded with NWA United States champion Magnum TA (Terry Allen).
  • ~~~”The Nature Boy” Ric Flair lured Magnum TA into the ring and then humiliated him with a vicious beating.
  • ~~~A week later, Ric Flair insulted Magnum by offering him a new suit, so he could “look like a champion”.
  • ~~~Magnum TA tore the suit to shreds and knocked Ric Flair out with a belly-to-belly suplex.
  • ~~~Ric Flair challenged Magnum TA to last ten minutes in a match with him.
  • ~~~When Magnum lasted the full ten minutes, he was attacked by Ole and Arn Anderson, who claimed to be Flair’s cousins.
  • September 29, 1985: The Nature Boy, Ric Flair finally turned heel in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • ~~~Ric Flair had finished defeating Nikita Koloff in a Steel Cage match, but he was attacked by the Russians!
  • ~~~Dusty Rhodes entered the steel cage and rescued Ric Flair, who seemed angry about the save from Rhodes.
  • ~~~Ole and Arn Anderson then locked themselves in the steel cage and helped Flair demolish Dusty Rhodes’ ankle.
  • ~~~In an interview not long after this, Ric Flair hinted at a partnership with Magnum’s arch-enemy, Tully Blanchard.
  • October 2, 1985: Ric Flair wrestled to a double count-out against AWA World champion Rick Martel on in Tokyo, JAPAN.
  • November 28, 1985 – Starrcade: Ric Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes in the main event to retain the NWA World Heavyweight title.
  • ~~~The referee was knocked to the outside of the ring, so The Andersons quickly interfered and assisted Ric Flair.
  • ~~~Dusty Rhodes gained a pinfall when a new referee arrived, and was announced as the new NWA World champion!
  • ~~~The following week, it was announced that Flair was disqualification’d by the original referee, so the title was returned to Ric Flair .
  • Ric Flair formed a formal alliance with The Andersons, Tully Blanchard, and Blanchard’s manager, James J Dillon
  • Ole Anderson was injured on New Year’s Day. As a result, Arn, Blanchard, and Flair became known as the 3 Horsemen for a few months.
  • Ric Flair had some close matches against Ricky Morton, so the Horsemen attacked him and ground his face into the locker room floor.
  • Ole Anderson made a comeback in June of 1986, officially forming The Four Horsemen (and the rest is history).

The IV Horsemen Years: Ric Flair vs. Dusty Rhodes and Nikita Koloff:

  • Ric Flair agreed to defend the NWA World Title over a dozen times while on the Great American Bash Tour.
  • Challengers; Wahoo McDaniel, Dusty Rhodes, Nikita Koloff, Ron Garvin, Ricky Morton, Robert Gibson, Hawk, and Animal.
  • February 2, 1986 – MoscaMania: Ric Flair defeated “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes in Hamilton, Ontario.
  • July 25, 1986: Dusty Rhodes defeated Ric Flair in a Greensboro Cage match to win the NWA World Heavyweight title.
  • August 9, 1986: Ric Flair defeated Dusty Rhodes to regain the NWA World Heavyweight title in St. Louis, Missouri.
  • ~~~Horsemen member Tully Blanchard had injured Dusty Rhodes’ knee with a chairshot just two nights earlier.
  • ~~~Instead of getting pinned, Rhodes lost the title when he blacked out while in the figure-four leglock.
  • In another rematch, Dusty Rhodes’ valet Baby Doll turned on him to side with The Nature Boy!
  • Fall 1986: JJ Dillon and The IV Horsemen perpetrated the infamous parking lot assault of “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes
  • Ric Flair then had to deal with Nikita Koloff, who had become a fan-favorite after Magnum TA’s career-ending car accident.
  • November 27, 1986 – Starrcade: NWA World champion Ric Flair defeated NWA United States champion Nikita Koloff by disqualification.
  • February 15, 1987 – MoscaMania 2: Nikita Koloff defeated NWA World Heavyweight champion Ric Flair by disqualification in Hamilton, Ontario.

The IV Horsemen Years: WAR GAMES:

  • Early 1987: Ole Anderson left the Horsemen but was replaced by Lex Luger.
  • Ric Flair had a series of excellent matches against Barry Windham, including a victory at the 2nd annual Crockett Cup.
  • July 4, 1987 – Great American Bash: Ric Flair led the Horsemen into the first ever War Games match.
  • ~~~Dusty Rhodes and Nikita Koloff and The Road Warriors (Hawk and Animal) and Paul Ellering defeated The IV Horsemen and JJ Dillon
  • ~~~The War Machine (Big Bubba Rogers in a mask) replaced JJ Dillon for a rematch on July 31, but the result was the same.

The IV Horsemen Years: Ric Flair vs. The Garvins:

  • 1987: Ric Flair engaged in a war against The Garvin Family (Jimmy and Ron Garvin) that same summer.
  • ~~~”The Nature Boy” Ric Flair had set his eyes on Jimmy Garvin‘s wife and valet Precious.
  • ~~~Ric Flair tried to lure her away with a fur coat, but she just took the coat and left the Nature Boy hanging.
  • July 11, 1987 – Great American Bash: Ric Flair defeated Jimmy Garvin in a Steel Cage match to earn a date with Precious.
  • ~~~When “Precious” arrived at Flair’s hotel room, “she” turned out to be Ron Garvin who knocked out Ric Flair!!
  • September 25, 1987: Ron Garvin defeated Ric Flair to win the NWA World Heavyweight title in Detroit, Michigan.
  • November 26, 1987 – Starrcade: Ric Flair defeated Ron Garvin to regain the NWA World Heavyweight title.

The IV Horsemen Years: Ric Flair vs. Lex Luger and Sting:

  • December 1987: Lex Luger left the Horsemen and began to seek Ric Flair’s title. Sting became another new challenger.
  • March 27, 1988 – NWA Clash of champions: NWA World champion Ric Flair w/JJ Dillon vs. Sting ended in a 1-hour draw
  • A few weeks later, Barry Windham turned heel and took Lex Luger’s spot in the IV Horsemen w/JJ Dillon..
  • Soon, all four Horsemen were champions; Barry Windham (U.S. Title) and Anderson and Blanchard (Tag Team Titles).
  • July 10, 1988 – Great American Bash: Ric Flair defeated Lex Luger by a controversial referee’s decision .
  • In September, Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson left the NWA, so Flair and Windham were simply called “The Horsemen”.
  • December 7, 1988 – NWA Clash of champions: Ric Flair and Barry Windham defeated The Midnight Express.
  • December 26, 1988 – Starrcade: Ric Flair finally gained a pinfall victory over Lex Luger in the main event.

NWA: Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat:

  • February 1989: Ric Flair and Barry Windham were challenged to a tag team match against Eddie Gilbert and a mystery wrestler.
  • Ricky Steamboat was the partner, and he pinned Ric Flair (Eddie Gilbert and Ricky Steamboat beat Ric Flair and Barry Windham)
  • The Horsemen quickly lost their identity when JJ Dillon was fired and replaced by Hiro Matsuda.
  • February 20, 1989: Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat defeated Ric Flair to capture the NWA World Heavyweight title.
  • Within a few weeks, Hiro Matsuda and the Windham Brothers all disappeared, leaving Ric Flair to stand on his own.
  • April 2, 1989 – NWA Clash of champions: Ricky Steamboat defeated Ric Flair in a 2/3 Falls Match to win the NWA World Title!
  • May 7, 1989 – Wrestle War: Ric Flair defeated Ricky Steamboat to reclaim the NWA World Heavyweight title in Nashville.
  • ~~~After this match, Terry Funk (who was acting as one of 3 judges) attacked Ric Flair and piledrove him through a table!.
  • ~~~Ric Flair was out of action until July, but his old enemy Sting fought for him against the heel Terry Funk.

NWA: Ric Flair vs. Terry Funk and Gary Hart International:

  • July 23, 1989: “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair returned to action as a hero at the Great American Bash.
  • ~~~”The Nature Boy” Ric Flair defeated Terry Funk, who was assisted by Playboy Gary Hart.
  • ~~~The Great Muta attacked Ric Flair after the match, but Sting ran out to save Flair from further assault .
  • September 12, 1989 – NWA Clash of champions #8: Sting and Ric Flair defeated Dick Slater and Great Muta by disqualification.
  • October 28, 1989 – Halloween Havoc: Sting and Flair w/Ole Anderson defeated Terry Funk and The Great Muta w/Gary Hart.
  • ~~~This match took place in a Thunderdoom Cage with “The Living Legend” Bruno Sammartino as guest referee.
  • November 15, 1989 – NWA Clash of champions #9: “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair defeated Terry Funk in a I Quit Match.
  • ~~~As he promised, Terry Funk shook Ric Flair’s hand after losing the match and shouting “I Quit” into the microphone.
  • ~~~After the match; Ric Flair and Sting were attacked by The Great Muta and Lex Luger (who had become a rulebreaker again).
  • Arn Anderson made a return to the NWA (from the WWF) and reformed his team with Ole Anderson to help out Ric Flair.
  • December 13, 1989 – Starrcade: “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair competed in the Iron Man tournament.

  • After losing many rematches against Sting, Flair began teaming with Arn Anderson to focus on the tag team titles held by Doom

  • December 16, 1990 – Starrcade: Sting defended his title against the unknown Black Scorpion.
  • ~~~The Black Scorpion was unmasked to reveal (this time) “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair with a haircut.
  • January 11, 1991: Ric Flair defeated Sting to win his 8th NWA World Heavyweight Title.
  • Around that same time, the WCW World Title was created, so Flair technically held two World Heavyweight titles.
  • January 30, 1991 – Clash of the Champions 14: WCW world heavyweight champion Ric Flair vs. Scott Steiner ended in a draw to retain the title.
  • February 9, 1991 – Worldwide: Ric Flair defeated Mike Hart.

  • By 1991; World championship Wrestling had virtually separated from the National Wrestling Alliance.
  • February 24, 1991 – WrestleWar: Larry Zbyszko & The Four Horsemen (Barry Windham, Ric Flair & Sid Vicious) defeated Flyin’ Brian, Sting & The Steiner Brothers (Rick Steiner & Scott Steiner) in war games match.
  • March 21, 1991 – NJPW: Tatsumi Fujinami defeated Ric Flair in controversial fashion to capture the WCW World Heavyweight title.

Ric Flair then aligns himself with a face-turned Stone Cold Steve Austin to battle Vince McMahon and Kurt Angle.

  • August 5, 2002 – RAW: Flair gets a measure of revenge when he causes Jericho to lose a match to Rob Van Dam.
  • August 19, 2002 – RAW: Flair sneaks up behind Jericho and nails him with a trash can! A few minutes later, Jericho attacks Flair in the interview area busting Flair open. Jericho’s band, Fozzy, later performs on the RAW stage. After the song, a bloody Flair chases Jericho away and destroys the band’s equipment!
  • August 25, 2002 – SummerSlam: Ric Flair defeats Jericho with the figure four, but not without its controversy. Some say Flair tapped out during the match, but the referee was confused.
  • September 2, 2002 – RAW: Flair challenges Triple H for the new RAW World title, which was presented to HHH earlier. Later in the night, RVD and Ric Flair defeated HHH and Y2J in the main event, RVD got the frog splash and the pinfall on World champion Triple H!

  • ~~~Ric Flair promised that he will never wrestle again and he is not sad and fans should rejoice his career.

  • ~~~Triple H said a few other people wanted to say thank you, and he then held up the famous Four Horsemen sign.
  • ~~~Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Barry Windham, and JJ Dillon came out and hugged their leader, the Nature Boy!
  • ~~~Batista came out next and hugged his mentor. Followed by Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat! Next Harley Race!
  • ~~~Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, Dean Malenko, Chris Jericho, John Cena, then Ric Flair’s family came out.
  • ~~~The Nature Boy had regained his compure but broke down once again at the sight of his wife and four children.
  • ~~~Finally, “The Heartbreak Kid” came out and cried along with Ric Flair as they embraced in the crowded ring.
  • ~~~Triple H said they could keep it going all night, and then the entire WWE roster showed up to pay tribute.
  • ~~~The WWE wrestlers started a “Thank You, Ric” chant until the entire building was chanting THANK YOU, RIC!
  • After the show went off the air; the Undertaker and Vince McMahon both came out to show respect for Ric Flair.

  • ~~~Christopher Daniels came out and jumped off the cage taking out Immortal!
