Roddy Piper Career Highlights

The Beginning

  • After a falling out with his father, he hit the road, and from age 12 to 15, he stayed in youth hostels wherever he could find them.
  • Rod was expelled from North York’s Donview Heights Junior High School.

The Wrestling Business

  • Piper (age 15) had his first match with Larry Hennig and lost the match in ten seconds.
  • Piper started wrestling as a TV jobber in the early 70s in Winnipeg.
  • 1975: Piper’s first big push was in Los Angeles, where he wrestled as the “Masked Canadian”.
  • March 12, 1976: Piper defeated Chavo Guerrero to win the NWA Americas title.
  • July 22, 1977: Piper and Keith Franks (Adrian Adonis) defeated Tom Jones and Mando Guerrero to win the NWA World Tag Team titles.
  • April 21, 1978: Piper and Ron Bass defeated Chavo Guerrero and Black Gordman to win the NWA World Tag Team titles.
  • June 24, 1978: Piper defeated Lonnie Mayne to capture the NWA United States title.
  • 1978: Piper and John Stud teamed up to claim the Mid Atlantic Tag Team title.
  • December 31, 1978: Piper and Killer Brooks beat Dutch Savage and Johnathan Boyd for the NWA Pacific Northwest Tag Team title.
  • 1979: Piper and Ed Wiskowski (Col. DeBeers) won the NWA World Tag Team title in February.
  • Late 70s: Piper went to the Portland territory and formed a lasting bond with promoter Don Owen.
  • 1980: Piper and Rick Martel won the NWA Pacific Northwest tag team belts three times.

  • 1980s: Piper joined Jim Crockett’s NWA Mid-Atlantic promotion and became a star!
  • November 1, 1980: Piper won the Mid-Atlantic Television title in a tournament, defeating Paul Jones in the finals.
  • November 1980: Piper beat Ric Flair for the Mid-Atlantic U.S. Heavyweight title.
  • January 27, 1981: Piper beat Jack Brisco for the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight title.
  • November 1, 1981: Piper defeated Ricky Steamboat for the Mid-Atlantic title.
  • July 7, 1982: Piper defeated Jack Brisco, again, for the Mid-Atlantic title.
  • April 16, 1983: Piper beat Greg “The Hammer” Valentine for the NWA United States title.
  • Starrcade ’83: Piper beat Valentine in the legendary “dog collar” match.
  • ~~~Roddy lost 75% of the hearing in his left ear, which remains today.
  • ~~~It also threw off his equilibrium, and he was told his wrestling career was over.

World Wrestling Federation Part 1

  • January 1984: Piper jumped to the WWF and became their second biggest star behind only Hulk Hogan.
  • ~~~When Roddy Piper went to the WWF, he refused to wrestle in Portland out of loyalty to Don Owen.
  • ~~~When the WWF Event went to Portland, Vince McMahon would suspend him, but it only lasted a week.
  • Piper hosted the “Piper’s Pit”, an interview segment on WWF TV until his 1987 retirement.
  • ~~~”Piper’s Pit” segment was often the catalyst for numerous angles with other wrestlers.
  • February 18, 1985 – War to Settle the Score: WWF World Champion Hulk Hogan beat Roddy Piper via disqualification.
  • Wrestlemania I: Hulk Hogan and Mr. T defeated Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff.
  • October 5, 1985 – SNME: Roddy Piper vs Paul Orndorff ended in a double count-out..
  • November 7, 1985 – Wrestling Classic: Hulk Hogan def Roddy Piper via disqualification to retain.
  • January 4, 1986 – SNME: Jesse Ventura, Roddy Piper, and Bob Orton defeated  Hillbilly Jim, Uncle Elmer, and Cousin Luke.
  • Wrestlemania II: Roddy Piper was disqualified during a boxing match with Mr. T.
  • Roddy Piper eventually turned face, thus ending one of the biggest heel runs ever.
  • July 14, 1986 – King of the Ring: Roddy Piper vs. The Magnificent Muraco in the 1st round ended in a time limit draw.
  • October 4, 1986 – SNME: Roddy Piper pinned Iron Sheik.
  • November 1, 1986 – Superstars: Mr. Fuji defeated Roddy Piper by disqualification.
  • November 29, 1986 – SNME: Roddy Piper pinned his former friend Bob Orton.
  • January 3, 1987 – SNME: Adrian Adonis beat Roddy Piper via count-out.
  • Piper announced that his last match would be at Wrestlemania III against Adrian Adonis.
  • January 11, 1987 – Wrestling Challenge: Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper defeated King Harley Race and Paul Orndorff in a dark match.
  • March 14, 1987 – Superstars: Roddy Piper defeated Adrian Adonis in a dark match.
  • March 29, 1987 – Wrestlemania III: Roddy Piper defeated Adrian Adonis in a “Hair” match.
  • Piper retired from wrestling to pursue acting.

The Movies

  • Piper’s most successful film was They Live (1988), directed by John Carpenter.
  • Piper appeared in the following movies: Hell Comes To Frogtown (1987), Body Slam (’87), The Highwayman (TV, ’87), Buy and Cell (’89), Love Boat: A Valentine Voyage (’90, TV), No Contest (’94), Immortal Combat (’94), Back In Action (’94), Tough and Deadly (’95), Terminal Rush (’95), Marked Man (’95), Jungleground (’95), Sci-fighters (’96).
  • For a brief amount of time in the mid to late 80’s Roddy owned an auto repair shop in Portland, Or. called “Pipers Pit Stop”.

  • ~~~Roddy Piper was “taken out” before the match due to a legitimate injury so Ric Flair had to defend the titles alone.
  • Dave Meltzer (on WrestlingObserver.com) wrote on November 17: Roddy Piper underwent surgery this week after leaving the U.K. tour early. It is believed surgery was due to a disc problem. Piper will be out of Survivor Series and a replacement wrestler will be named to the legends team. Piper not participating in the match where he and Ric Flair lost the tag team titles in Manchester, England was due to the intense pain he was in. At the time it was believed to have been either a bowel problem or kidney stones.
  • November 27, 2006: Roddy Piper was diagnosed with Lymphoma (aka Hodgkin’s disease) and begins treatment immediately.
  • ~~~Radiation therapy is used to treat Hodgkin’s lymphoma; it is an extremely successful procedure, so the prognosis is good.
  • December 4, 2006 – RAW: The Highlanders defeated Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch in a Roddy Piper Tribute match.
  • February 12, 2007 – RAW: Jerry Lawler introduced the legendary “Rowdy” Roddy Piper – who came out and gave a speech.
  • ~~~Roddy Piper talked about his illness and thanked the fans of Portland then announced Dusty Rhodes into the Hall of Fame!
  • ~~~Dusty Rhodes came out and cut a promo until both Rhodes and Roddy Piper were attacked by the Samoan Bulldozer, Umaga!

  • July 1, 2009: Roddy Piper (Real Name: Roderick Toombs) was arrested by Los Angeles police at 1am on misdemeanor DUI charges.
  • Mike Aldren wrote (On October 8, 2009): Despite rumors to the contrary, Roddy Piper is not dying from terminal cancer. The rumor escalated from one wrestling website and took a life of it’s own. Noelle Kim-Retes, Piper’s agent, said that she talked to Piper the other day and he is doing fine. “He’s been going at it without a break since he was a teenager and the doctors told him that he needed a rest.” she said. The same website that reported Piper was dying later posted a “rumor killer” to kill the rumors they started.
  • November 16, 2009 – RAW: Rowdy Roddy Piper appeared as the special guest host in Madison Square Garden in New York City.
