Career Highlights

In the Beginning:

  • Jim Duggan was on the injured reserve list for a year with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons in the 70s.
  • Jim Duggan got the idea to bring a 2X4 to the ring from the movie “Walking Tall”.
  • 1978: Jim Duggan was trained to wrestle at the Sportatorium in Dallas, Texas.
  • Jim Duggan worked briefly with the WWWF and then Georgia Championship Wrestling.

Mid South Wrestling and Universal Wrestling Federation:

  • 1981: Jim Duggan moved onto Bill Watts’ Mid South Wrestling promotion based in the state of Louisana.
  • Jim Duggan’s first Mid-South match was as a bounty hunter, paid by Skandor Akbar, to take out Dick Murdoch.
  • October 13, 1982: Jim Duggan defeated Mike Sharpe to win the Louisiana Heavyweight title, which was eventually abandoned.
  • July 16, 1983: Jim Duggan defeated Ted DiBiase in the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • July 24, 1983: Magnum TA and Jim Duggan defeated Ted DiBiase and Mr. Olympia to capture the Mid-South Tag Team titles.
  • Jim Duggan pinned Krusher Kruschev in a “roulette coal miner’s glove” match before 23,000 fans in New Orleans.
  • March 16, 1986: Jim Duggan beats Buzz Sawyer (subbing for Dick Slater) to win the North American title.
  • ~~~Dick Slater was the reigning North American Heavyweight Champion as well as the UWF Television Champion.
  • ~~~Dick Slater gave the TV title to Buzz Sawyer, and decided to keep the North American belt.
  • ~~~Buzz Sawyer wrestled “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan that night and lost.
  • ~~~However, UWF President Bill Watts’ revealed that Dick Slater agreed that Sawyer would be defending the North American title.
  • ~~~So, Jim Duggan got the North American title, and Buzz Sawyer still had the TV belt, and Slater was left with nothing!
  • December 27, 1986: Jim Duggan and Terry Taylor defeated Bill Irwin and Bad Leroy Brown for the UWF Tag Team titles.
