January 2006: The following comes from the Portland Tribune and Phil Stanford’s column: Best wishes for a speedy recovery to former pro wrestler Billy Jack Haynes, who ended up in the hospital last week after someone worked him over with brass knuckles outside a body shop out on Southeast Foster Road. .. According to owner Jimmy Longoria, who called the ambulance, he and Haynes were carrying on a pleasant conversation in the yard when this crankster he’d never seen before happened by, took offense at something or other, and attacked the 6-4, 250-pound Haynes. .. Other eyewitnesses, who also can’t provide a positive ID, say there were two of them. Portland police are investigating the possibility that there might be more to the story than meets the eye.

Jay Ambler wrote: When he was still known as Billy Jack, Haynes made a spectactular debut in Eddie Graham’s Championship Wrestling from Florida (CWF) beginning in either the Winter of 1982 or January 1983. He had a strong push by none other than Dusty Rhodes and Mike Graham. With Haynes case it was unique because the Graham promotion openly acknowledged Haynes’ prior success in the Pacfic Northwest promotion. In fact for weeks on CWF’s Saturday evening program, hosted by the great Gordon Solie, ran commercials indicating that Haynes was coming and going to make a huge debut, quickly becoming a fan favorite. He would do promotions where he would implore kids to stay away from drugs and stay in school.

Haynes often tagged with the likes of Rhodes, Graham, Blackjack Mulligan and Barry Windham. Haynes then began a series of matches against Kendo Nagaski (JP), who was known to carry and at times use a kendo stick. The series of matches were known as the the ‘Full Nelson’ (Haynes’ finish move) versus the kendo stick. The series climax when Haynes won the CWF Florida belt in March 1984.

At the same time Superstar Billy Graham was making a run in Florida pairing up with Kevin Sullivan. Haynes and Graham began a series of matches to determine who was the true strong man. These matches were also centered around arm wrestling contests. This culminated in Graham defeating Haynes in June 1984 for the Florida belt. In my opinion the feud between Haynes and Graham was legendary, on par with Rhodes-Graham matches in the late 1970s.
