Brad Dykens Reviews 2 DVD’s from October 2009

WOMEN SUPERSTARS UNCENSORED
DVD #1: “WSU EXCELLENCE”
DVD #2: “WSU RAINING MISERY”
(October 3, 2009 – Union City, NJ)

====================

INTRODUCTION: Women Superstars Uncensored released two DVD’s featuring matches from their October 3rd event in Union City, New Jersey, featuring the rise of Rain. Tommy Wong & Jimmy Gentry are back doing commentary for both DVD’s, and thankfully there was no sign of Primetime Amy Lee.

WSU

WSU EXCELLENCE

KICKOFF: The show started with Angel Orsini hunting for Rain and finding her in the locker room. They engaged in a brief brawl before being separated by the WSU jobber squad.

SINGLES MATCH
Malia Hosaka vs. Cindy Rogers: It was a battle of old school technical wrestlers. Cindy Rogers has had some bad luck since returning to WSU from injury, and couldn’t get back on track here against one of her idols. Malia Hosaka pulled out a victory over the wrestler who calls herself the “Definition of Technician.” After the match, some guy interviewed Cindy Rogers and asked her about her obvious ring rust. Rogers said she may have some ring rust, but it won’t be long before she is back on her game!

SINGLES MATCH
Jana vs. Jennifer Cruz: Jana destroyed J-Cruz on the “SPIRIT” DVD, but then J-Cruz scored an upset victory over Jana on the “As The World Turns” DVD – so this was something of a rubber match between the two. Jana let Cruz get some offense in before stretching her into submission! Jana wants a shot at the Spirit title, but wants to get her hands on Latasha even more!

IN THE RING
Missy Hyatt + Becky Bayless + Rick Cataldo: Missy Hyatt came out and tried to interact with the crowd, but they didn’t understand most of what she was saying. Missy started babbling on saying things that she probably thought were important, but she ended up burying the entire WSU roster by accident. She buried everybody except Becky Bayless, who she claims was the only WSU wrestler in two years to ask for her help. Missy introduced the chronically cute Becky Bayless, who was greeted by chants of “welcome back!” Bayless praised Missy Hyatt, and kissed her butt, before engaged in some awkward public conversation. It went from bad to worse when the irritating Rick Cataldo showed up to crash the party. I should have hit the mute button and drooled over Becky’s outfit, but I foolishly listened to Cataldo claiming to be a REAL DIVA and the “TOP BITCH” here at WSU. Bayless screamed at Cataldo, who then called her a jailbird – causing Bayless to slap him across the face and the match began!

SINGLES MATCH
Becky Bayless w/Missy Hyatt vs. Rick Cataldo: I give Becky Bayless all the credit for looking so damn good, on her way to victory over the most irritating person in the history of professional wrestling.

SINGLES MATCH
Amber O’Neal vs. Sassy Stephie: Sassy Stephie has been appearing at SHIMMER events lately, but she has made her way to the WSU rings to gain a little more experience. Stephie was up against the undefeated (in WSU) southern star Amber O’Neal. While SHIMMER books O’Neal like a total jobber, WSU has been treating O’Neal like a star – putting her on an impressive undefeated streak. She even looks like a star. Amber’s over-confidence almost cost her a victory early on, but she avoided embarrassment and taught the rookie a lesson. Amber embarrassed Sassy by giving her a version of the stinkface, which some dirty men would pay money to be on the receiving end of. Amber has won all of her matches with a screwy variation of the backslide combined with a bridge, and she used that move on Stephie to continue her winning streak in WSU!

WSU SPIRIT TITLE MATCH
Latasha (c) vs. Lea Morrison: 19 year old Lea Morrison was Latasha’s mystery challenger for the WSU Spirit championship. Lea and Latasha actually trained together and started their careers in a promotion called Top Rope Promotions. Even with all the experience in the ring together, they were still pretty sloppy. The finish saw Jana show up and attack Latasha for the disqualification. Lea Morrison came to Latasha’s rescue, and expressed her frustration towards Jana for costing her a chance at becoming champion. Jana explained that she was going to win the Spirit title, and she wanted to win it from Latasha!

WSU TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH
Hailey Hatred & Jessicka Havoc (c) vs. Alicia & Brooke Carter: Last month the ill-mannered team of Hailey Hatred & Jessicka Havoc dethroned Alicia & Brooke Carter of the WSU Tag Team championships. Now Alicia & Brooke found themselves in the challenger position, trying to reclaim their prized championship. Brooke Carter is very sweet and indeed talented, but she constantly thrown into matches where she is clearly way out of her league. A few years ago I heard about Jessicka Havoc when she was just being rescued from the backyard leagues. I thought her name was so unique that I actually created a profile for her here on OWW. I hoped she would make it big some day, and here we are five years later and she is a WSU Tag Team champion. Now that I’ve gotten to see her on video a couple of times through several different promotions, I have to admit I am developing a little bit of a crush on her. She looks hot, and more importantly she looks like a professional wrestler. She has the size AND the beauty, when so many girls out there only have one of those vital traits. I couldn’t be more thrilled about Havock’s success on the independent circuit and I’m more than happy to support her 100%. The finish saw an unfortunate loss of concentration by the challengers, and the champions took advantage. Alicia was pinned and Hatred & Havock walked out with their belts in tact.

IN THE RING
Alicia & Brooke Carter/Brittney Savage + Rick Cataldo + Becky Bayless: As if one dose of Rick Cataldo wasn’t enough, we are treated with yet another appearance by the most annoying person in the history of the world. Cataldo came out dressed as Miss Hancock (WCW) holding a clip board to scout the talent. Cataldo whacked Alicia with the clipboard and Brooke flattened her with a Diamond Cutter. Brooke suddenly turned into an arrogant heel and proclaimed that her real name was Brittney Savage. The new Savage/Cataldo alliance threatened to disfigure Alicia’s face with a chair until Becky Bayless (Alicia’s best friend) made the save!

UNCENSORED RULES MATCH
Angel Orsini vs. Rain: These two had a very unstable alliance with the common goal of defeating Mercedes Martinez, until it finally came to an end at the last WSU event. Angel Orsini is like a pack of Mentos, and Rain is a bottle of Coca-Cola. Instead of doing a fight to the death, they decided to go the methodical route – with a series submission holds. Both girls tried to wear the other down, hoping to force them into giving up. The finish saw Rain take the easy way out, and DDT’d Angel head-first on a chair for the win!

WSU CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
Mercedes Martinez (c) vs. Portia Perez: They acknowledged that Mercedes Martinez was battling through an injury. Portia Perez has experience all over the world, and has earned the right to call herself an International Superstar. Portia has gone from being a cutie to a hottie over the last few years, usually depending on if she is playing a babyface or a heel. Traditionally she is a babyface in her homeland of Canada, and a heel everyone else, but WSU has decided to go against the grain and book her as a babyface. So this was a battle of fan-favorites, but there is always that possibility of a mid-match attitude adjustment when there is a championship involved. The spirit of competition was alive and well, as they wrestled fair and square for over twenty five minutes before Martinez rolled up the challenger for the 1-2-3 to retain her WSU championship. Martinez showed great sportsmanship after the match by helping Portia up to her feet and showing her the respect that she deserves.

POST-MATCH DRAMA: Rain came out and fired some comments at Mercedes Martinez, only to have Portia Perez stick up for the champion. Rain said Nikki Roxx wasn’t there tonight, but she hired a couple assassins from the locker room. Hailey Hatred & Jessicka Havoc hit the ring and beat up on Martinez and Perez – who had just wrestled for 25 minutes – until Angel Orsini made the save with a steel chair! They set up Portia vs. Rain and Martinez/Orsini vs. Hatred/Havoc for the next DVD.

WSU

WSU RAINING MISERY

SINGLES MATCH
Cindy Rogers vs. Sassy Stephanie: Cindy Rogers finally worked off the ring rust, and picked up her first victory since returning from injury. I’m a big fan of technical wrestling, but this match was slow, uncoordinated, and boring..

TAG TEAM MATCH
Alicia & Becky Bayless w/Missy Hyatt vs. Rick Cataldo & Brittney Savage: I am going to give Alicia a much-needed last name and call her Alicia Funk, in honor of her fake retirement a few years back. Becky Bayless has always been chronically cute, but now she is terminally adorable. Those two fan favorites were accompanied to the ring by WSU Hall of Famer Missy Hyatt. Booking Missy Hyatt on your wrestling show is comparable, in more ways than one, to flushing cold hard cash down the toilet. I doubt she draws any interest to the show, and it wouldn’t surprise me if she caused fans to not purchase the WSU DVDs. Their opponents were the team of recently turned heel Brittney Savage and the irritating Rick Cataldo. At the risk of giving Cataldo too much credit, it looks like he is modeling himself after the great Gorgeous George Wagner. Savage is way better as a heel, and taking bad-guy short cuts helps compensate for her cuteness and lack of size. Alicia was the only participant with any sense of timing. This match ended with first of several confusing finishes, but at least Bayless & “Funk” came out on top. After the match, it looked like Savage was going to dump Cataldo for losing the match. Savage yelled at Cataldo until he picked up a mirror and showed her her own reflection. Suddenly, Savage was in a good mood and walked backstage arm-in-arm with her jumpsuit wearing boy toy.

SINGLES MATCH
Amber O’Neal vs. Malia Hosaka: Amber O’Neal is the new Perfect 10. Damn, she is sexy! She has gone 3-0 since debuting in WSU, and her most recent victory came at the hands of WSU Hall of Famer Malia Hosaka. The 21-year veteran looked to get some revenge on O’Neal by squashing her winning streak. Malia was on a roll, but O’Neal was sneaky and used her unique roll-up to get a twisted pinfall with her legs on the ropes for leverage – extending her WSU streak to 4-0.

WSU SPIRIT TITLE MATCH
Latasha (c) vs. Jana vs. Lea Morrison: Jana came out to the Phil Collins song “Hold on,” which effectively kills her hip hop dancer gimmick once and for all. Jana is mean and extremely angry with former tag team partner, WSU Spirit champion Latasha, and feels taking her title is the only way to end their feud. Lea Morrison is a cute young rookie still soaking up all the experience she can. She really needs a new hair style, and Jana agreed because she repeatedly used Morrison’s hair to her advantage, whipping her around the ring with vicious intentions. Yet another botched finish saw Jana pick up a strange victory, and you could literally hear the crickets chirping from the bathroom of the restaurant down the street. Seriously, the fans weren’t really stunned they just did not care for the way Jana captured the WSU Spirit title.

#1 CONTENDERS MATCH
Rain vs. Portia Perez: Rain came out with her hired assassins, Hailey Hatred & Jessicka Havoc, poised to cement her self-proclaimed status as the number one contender to the WSU championship. Portia Perez came out and protested the hired assassins being present at ringside, but they would not listen to the referee as he pleaded for them to leave. Thankfully, Angel Orsini & WSU champion Mercedes Martinez showed up and chased Hatred & Havoc backstage, which is where they stayed for the rest of the match! So it was one-on-one with two solid performers wrestling a very competitive match. Rain did manage to score the victory all on her own. The match was pretty good, but the finish was more than a little anti-climactic.

WSU TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH
Hailey Hatred & Jessicka Havoc (c) vs. Mercedes Martinez & Angel Orsini: Mercedes Martinez is the reigning WSU champion, and Angel Orsini is a former WSU champion, so both of them were looking to join the WSU double-champion club – current membership includes only Alicia. It got a little hot and heavy with some high-risk moves that put the champions in jeopardy. Late in the match, it looked like the challengers were going to achieve their goal when the referee suddenly disappeared into thin air during a pinfall attempt. It turns out Rain snuck out to the ring and pulled the referee out just as he was about to count three for a title change. The announcers had been on their best behavior until now, but one of them shouted “that f*cking b*tch!” Portia Perez ran out and attacked Rain, but then Hatred came to her rescue and went after Perez. Havoc and Orsini brawled and all four disappeared behind the curtain, leaving Rain alone with an unconscious Mercedes Martinez in the ring. Rain slid in the ring and cracked Martinez across the back with a chair! The match was ruled a no contest. Rain kicked and punched Martinez, and then bit the top or her head! Rain proceeded to jab the edge of the folding chair into the mid-section of Martinez. The crowd sat there emotionless like slack-jawed hicks as this assault was going on. Rain continued to beat up Martinez and nobody came out to help her. Rain picked up Martinez and gave her a DDT on top of the folding chair to knock her out cold for good. Rain snatched the belt and raised it above her head to celebrate her assaulting abilities. Rain left and the WSU crew cautiously helped WSU champion Martinez back to the locker-room.

FINAL VERDICT: There was some really bad wrestling matches on the under-card, but as usual, the last two matches were really good. I wouldn’t necessarily say they made up for it, because the last two matches were merely set-ups for future matches. My recommendation is to skip this DVD.
