WSU WOMEN’S J-CUP 2010

INTRODUCTION: They did the usual introductions of all eight participants in the tournament before Angel Orsini and Nikki Roxx got into a physical altercation to hype their first round contest. The other three first round matches looked one-sided and terribly predictable.

J-CUP TOURNAMENT – FIRST ROUND
Alicia vs. Tina San Antonio: Tina is super cute, but is also super green. Alicia got an easy entry into the second round.

J-CUP TOURNAMENT – FIRST ROUND
Brittney Savage w/Rick Cataldo vs. Marti Belle (sub for Divina Fly): Brittney wanted a free pass into the second round because her scheduled opponent no-showed, but the commissioner came out and said she would have to wrestle a replacement. Marti Belle is 10 times greener than her tag team partner, Tina San Antonio – and they both ended up on the losing end of their first round matches. At least that sets up an interesting Alicia-Brittney second round clash.

J-CUP TOURNAMENT – FIRST ROUND
Jana vs. “The Fighting Female Phenom” Jazz: Jana said it didn’t matter if Jazz was the reason she became a wrestler, because she doesn’t care who stands in her way – she will knock them down if they get in her way. Jazz said she likes to call it the JAZZ-Cup and said she would use Jana as an example to show the world why she is the fighting female phenom! My fear was that Jazz was brought in to do the job to Jana and make her look good. Thankfully she did make Jana look good, but still took the victory and secured her spot in the second round.

J-CUP TOURNAMENT – FIRST ROUND
Angel Orsini vs. Nikki Roxx: Roxx explained that she picked a fight with Angel during the opening segment in an effort to get revenge for Angel taking the WSU championship from her two years ago. I almost forgot about that! You could also take into consideration the stuff that happened when Rain & Roxx double-crossed Orsini and turned her babyface last year. Needless to say, there is a lot of history between these two. It is always strange to watch Roxx work as a heel, because she is usually so adorable. They wrestled a hard fought match, which ended with Orsini getting the victory but hurting her arm along the way. This set up a showdown between former ECW vixens Angel Orsini and Jazz in the semi-final.

J-CUP TOURNAMENT – SECOND ROUND
Alicia vs. Brittney Savage w/Rick Cataldo: Anyone who has paying attention to WSU knows this is also a bitter grudge match. The feud revolves around the WSU Spirit title, which they have traded several times. This match had nothing to do with Spirit, but it was about the Women’s J-Cup, and Alicia defeated her enemy to earn a place in the finals of the prestigeous tournament!

J-CUP TOURNAMENT – SECOND ROUND
Angel Orsini vs. “The Fighting Female Phenom” Jazz: The story here was if Angel’s arm injury would hold up against the often-brutal offense of Jazz. This type of match could really stand out on any card, but it was relatively short and ended with Angel hitting her finisher on Jazz and moving on to the finals against fellow babyface Alicia. The arm injury wasn’t really a factor. Angel embraced Jazz after the match and Jazz wished her luck in the finals.

WSU CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
Mercedes Martinez (c) vs. Amber O’Neal: Mercedes Martinez said she won the Women’s J-Cup two years ago and it propelled her to win the WSU championship. Martinez told Amber O’Neal to kiss her winning streak good-bye! Amber said she always has a plan, and promised to leave tonight with the title and a record of 7-0. One observation I have about Amber is that she’s really good at making rookie’s look good, and she has great matches with mid-carders, but she really stinks when she’s up against main event stars. Amber was really pushed to the stars and got the best of Martinez here. The finish saw Amber come within an eyelash of scoring a pinfall, but the champion recovered and hit the Fishermen’s suplex to retain the WSU championship! Amber’s winning streak dies at SIX.

J-CUP TOURNAMENT – FINAL MATCH
Alicia vs. Angel Orsini: Angel Orsini won the Women’s J-Cup last year, so she was trying to repeat the incredible feat of winning three matches in one night. They really put all their eggs in this basket, and both girls put in a great effort to save the tournament. The match started out respectfully, but eventually spilled out of the ring and around the building. They kept talking about how Alicia came out of retirement vowing to win everything there was to win in WSU. She was previously the WSU champion, then she came back and won the WSU Tag Team and Spirit titles, and now she has the Women’s J-Cup. Alicia pulled out the impressive victory with an A-bomb on Orsini to win the prestigeous J-Cup! Mercedes Martinez came out and congratulated Alicia, reminding her that it could lead back to the WSU championship. Martinez hyped the title match with Alicia on June 26th. Martinez said she knows Alicia can give her one of the best matches of her career and they shook on it!

FINAL VERDICT: The first round was somewhat disappointing but the second round and finals were decent. It’s not the best DVD they’ve put out but it’s certainly not the worst either. I have a feeling the June DVD’s will be spectacular.

WSU KING & QUEEN OF THE RING 2010

INTRODUCTION: While the King & Queen concept sounds really cool, the last two King & Queen of the Ring tournaments have failed to impress me – and failed miserably. Last year the tournament was won by Jay Lethal and his girlfriend Miss April (who was WWE-bound at the time), but it wasn’t as cool as it sounds. My one big complaint every year is with the NWS crew (male wrestlers) not holding up their end of the bargain. NWS is a very successful promotion in New Jersey which somehow manages to sell-out multiple towns using wrestlers that look like any joe blow off the street to fill out a card headlined by one or two WWE legends and at least one gimmicked imposter (cough, the Patriot, cough). Unfortunately WSU always gets the use of the joe blows on the roster when they do these joint shows. One thing about it is that it gives the impression that anybody can become a wrestler if they live in New Jersey.

KING & QUEEN TOURNAMENT – 1st ROUND MATCH
Alicia & Devon Moore vs. Marti Belle & Danny Demanto: Danny Demanto complained that he was being forced to team with an “alternate” because his scheduled QUEEN was a no-show. The weekend seemed to belong to Alicia, coming off a big victory in the finals of the Women’s J-Cup the night before. The crowd was elated to see her knock the evil Danny Demanto out of the tournament in the first round. The commissioner was more than happy to announce that we would not have to see Demanto’s face for the rest of the night!

KING & QUEEN TOURNAMENT – 1st ROUND MATCH
Angel Orsini & J.D. Smoothie vs. Nikki Roxx & Kevin Matthews: Angel Orsini was happy with her teeny tiny tag team partner, J.D. Smoothie – one of the ‘joe blows’ of the NWS Cruiserweight division. Nikki Roxx’s partner was former WWE developmental douchebag Kevin Matthews, who at least looks like a real wrestler. The theme of the night seemed to be that the match quality went up when the girls were in the ring. Orsini vs. Roxx was a rematch from the first round of the J-Cup the night before. Roxx got a measure of revenge by knocking Orsini out of the King & Queen tournament this time around.

KING & QUEEN TOURNAMENT – 1st ROUND MATCH
Jana & Nicky Oceans vs. Niya & Jumping Joey Janella: Jana was paired with “The Love Machine” Nicky Oceans, who wasn’t a complete jabroni like some of the others. Jana said she made it to the finals of the King & Queen twice now and lost both times, so she warned Oceans not to screw it up for her! Niya is another WSU rookie, with extraordinary long brown hair, looking to make a splash. She is a little tiny bit chunky (in a cute way) but has a whole lot of spirit. I became an instant fan when she performed the leaping splits during her entrance into the ring – WOW! The match started and I was impressed with her spunky in-ring skills as well. By the way, Niya was teamed with another “joe blow” NWS Cruiserweight named Joey Janella. Jana & Oceans were quite dominant, and Jana came out of it as the star by destroying Niya and pinning Janella in the middle of the ring. The last thing I want to say is Niya has the potential to replace Roxie Cotton as my official WSU crush.

KING & QUEEN TOURNAMENT – 1st ROUND MATCH
Jazz & Balls Mahoney vs. Amber O’Neal & Bison Bravado: Balls & Jazz were the special attraction, but I prayed they weren’t booked to win it all like Jay Lethal did last year. Amber O’Neal’s winning streak came to an end the night before, but the last victory of the streak came against Jazz at a previous WSU event. Jazz was looking to get that victory back from the blonde bombshell. Amber is smoking hot, I tell you what. Jazz was making her comeback after delivering twin babies with husband Rodney Mack. Once again the ladies shined when they were in the ring, while the males embarrassed themselves. Balls is looking disturbingly similar to Mick Foley lately. Amber took great delight in watching Balls try to figure out her Bison-like partner’s weakness. Team ECW prevailed and made their way into the second round and one step closer to becoming the first Extreme King & Queen of the Ring!

WSU CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
Mercedes Martinez (c) vs. Melissa Coates: This date marked the return of the Thunder Bay Glamazon, Melissa Coates, to WSU to take advantage of Mercedes Martinez’s willingness to defend the WSU championship against all-comers. Coates is a muscular blonde bombshell ready to do business with anybody inside the squared circle. Coates was aggressive in her challenge, but was no match for the dominant champion – who looked like a million bucks in retaining the WSU title in a short match.

KING & QUEEN TOURNAMENT – 2nd ROUND MATCH
Alicia & Devon Moore vs. Jana & Nicky Oceans: Jana once again warned her partner not to screw things up for her as she attempted to make it to the finals of the King & Queen tournament for the third year in a row. Alicia vs. Jana was the highlight of the match, but once the boys got in there it really started to stink. After a decent match, Alicia hit the A-bomb on Jana and secured her team’s spot in the finals.

KING & QUEEN TOURNAMENT – 2nd ROUND MATCH
Jazz & Balls Mahoney vs. Nikki Roxx & Kevin Matthews: This match included the four most experienced wrestlers in the entire tournament. Roxx vs. Jazz was a very intriguing match-up if you ask me. Balls got a kick out of the fans and stalled during the opening moments of the match. Nikki Roxx would look damn good with a crown on her head. Doesn’t really matter because I’d still be looking at her unbelievable butt. Late in the match, Amber O’Neal came back out and attacked Jazz in the ring, directly causing her to lose. This aided Nikki Roxx & Kevin Matthews in advancing to the finals of the King & Queen and one step closer to my dream of seeing Roxx wearing nothing but a crown on her head.

WSU SPIRIT TITLE MATCH
Brittney Savage (c) w/Rick Cataldo vs. Tina San Antonio: Not sure why somebody like Tina San Antonio, with zero victories in her career, gets a shot at the Spirit title. I guess it’s cause she has spirit. When Rick Cataldo started interfering, the announcers wondered why Marti Belle was not out there helping her partner. Tina is a true cutie, but she was no match for the evil Brittney Savage – especially with the irritating Cataldo at ringside.

KING & QUEEN TOURNAMENT – FINAL MATCH
Alicia & Devon Moore vs. Nikki Roxx & Kevin Matthews: If I didn’t already know the results of this match, I would have really been on the edge of my seat waiting to find out the winner. Alicia vs. Roxx was a great match-up, but once again the boys stunk up the ring. I propose that WSU just do a Queen of the Ring tournament in six months. The finish saw Devon Moore hit a shooting star press off the ring apron to take out big Kevin Matthews. Meanwhile, in the ring, Alicia hit Roxx with the A-bomb to win the match and the tournament! It was certainly Alicia’s big weekend, having won both the Women’s J-Cup AND the King & Queen of the Ring, while she continues to be the poster-girl for WSU. Good luck to her as she tries to become the first ever 2-time WSU champion at the June event!

FINAL VERDICT: Very sorry for the negative feedback throughout this review, but the male wrestlers really brought the event down. It just goes to show how good the WSU girls are that they have to carry male wrestlers in a so-called “male dominated” sport. This month’s DVD’s were sub-par, but I have a feeling the June DVD’s will be spectacular.
