New Japan Pro-Wrestling – The Beginning:

  • Keiji Mutoh’s first stint in New Japan wasn’t very successful, often teaming with Masahiro Chono and Shiro Koshinaka.
  • April 1985: Keiji Mutoh and Mokoto Arakawa defeated Shin’ya Hashimoto and Shuko Kim.
  • November, 1985: Mutoh was sent to NWA Florida territory to gain experience.
  • May 21, 1986: White Ninja (Keiji Mutoh) defeated Kendall Windham to win the NWA Florida Heavyweight Title.
  • June, 1986: Kendall Windham beat White Ninja to regain the NWA Florida title.
  • October 9, 1986: Keiji Mutoh returned to Japan, joining the UWF as “Space Lone Wolf”.
  • November 3, 1986: Antonio Inoki and Kerry Von Erich defeated Space Lone Wolf and Kengo Kimura.
  • ~~~After the match, Inoki knocked out Mutoh with his Tuokon Slap Attack.
  • December 11, 1986 – Sumo Hall Show: Tatsumi Fujinami and Keiji Mutoh defeated Mr. Pogo and Kendo Nagasaki.
  • Ferburary 5, 1987: Tatsumi Fujinami and Keiji Mutoh vs. Akira Maeda and Yoshiaki Fujiwara went to Double Count-out.
  • March 20, 1987 – IWGP Tag Team League: Keiji Mutoh and Shiro Koshinaka defeated Nobuhiko Takada and Akira Maeda to capture the IWGP Tag Team Titles.
  • March 26, 1987 – Inoki Tuokon Live II: Nobuhiko Takada and Akira Maeda defeated Keiji Mutoh and Shiro Koshinaka to win the IWGP Tag Team titles.
  • August 2, 1987: Keiji Mutoh and Tatsutoshi Goto defeated Johnny Smith and Bad News Allen.
  • August 19, 1987: Riki Choshu, Tatsumi Fujinami, Kengo Kimura, Akira Maeda, and Super Strong Machine defeated Antonio Inoki, Yoshiaki Fujiwara, Kantaro Hoshino, Keiji Mutoh and Seiji Sakaguchi in an Elimination Match.
  • August 20, 1987: Tatsumi Fujinami and Riki Choshu defeated Antonio Inoki and Keiji Mutoh.
  • October 1987: Keiji Mutoh and Kengo Kimura defeated Konga the Barbarian and Manny Fernandez.
  • December 1987: The Von Erichs (Kerry and Kevin) defeated Keiji Mutoh and Shiro Koshinaka.
  • Keiji Mutoh was sent outside Japan to gain more experience.

World Wrestling Council – Black Ninja:

  • Keiji Mutoh soon emerged in Puerto Rico in the WWC, where he wrestled as “Black Ninja”.
  • February 6, 1988: Black Ninja defeated Invader I to win the WWC Television Title.
  • February, 1988: Black Ninja participated in the Gillete Cup Tournament, which was won by Carlos Colon.
  • April 2, 1988: Invader I beat Black Ninja to regain the WWC Television Title.
  • May 14, 1988: Black Ninja beat Miguel Perez Jr. to become the WWC Puerto Rican Champion.
  • August 6, 1988: Ricky Santana defeated Black Ninja to win the WWC Puerto Rican title.
  • July 2, 1988: Keiji Mutoh teamed-up with Masahiro Chono and Shin’ya Hashimoto, creating the Tuokon San Yushi, Three Fire Balls.
  • July 29, 1988: Tuokon San Yushi defeated Tatsumi Fujinami, Kengo Kimura and Shiro Koshinaka by disqualification.
  • Black Ninja engaged in bloody feuds with sadistic men like Carlos Colon, Abdullah the Butcher, Bruiser Brody and TNT.

Florida – The Rising Suns:

  • Super Ninja had a brief run in Florida, where he won the Florida Heavyweight title.
  • Super Ninja was managed by Sir Oliver Humperdink and teamed with the Great Kabuki as the Rising Suns.

National Wrestling Alliance – THE GREAT MUTA:

  • Keiji Mutoh soon caught the eye of then NWA president, Jim Crockett.
  • Keiji Mutoh signed with Jim Crockett’s National Wrestling Alliance and was transformed into the “Great Muta”!
  • The Great Muta wore face paint and spewed green mist into the air before his matches, as he was billed as the son of The Great Kabuki.
  • The Great Muta formed a tag team with Dragon Master (Kendo Nagasaki) and were managed by Gary Hart.
  • April 1, 1989 – NWA TV: Gary Hart, Hiro Matsuda and The Great Muta were special guests at The Danger Zone held by Paul E. Dangerously.
  • April 2, 1989 – Clash Of The Champions VI: The Great Muta defeated Steven Casey.
  • April 29, 1989 – NWA TV: The Great Muta defeated Lee Scott.
  • May 7, 1989 – WrestleWar, Music City Showdown: The Great Muta defeated Doug Gilbert.
  • The Great Muta began to feud with NWA Television champion, Sting, a feud that would go on for the next 10 years.
  • July 23, 1989 – Great American Bash: Sting vs The Great Muta ended in a no contest when there was a double pin finish.
  • ~~~Later on the night, Muta attacked Ric Flair after his victory over Terry Funk.
  • September 3, 1989: The Great Muta defeated Sting in the rematch to win the held up NWA Television title!
  • September 12, 1989: Ric Flair and Sting defeated The Great Muta and Dick Slater via DQ.
  • October 14, 1989: Ric Flair defeated The Great Muta via DQ to retain the NWA World Heavyweight Title.
  • October, 1989: The Great Muta beat Dick Murdoch to retain the NWA World Television title.
  • October 29, 1989 – Halloween Havoc: Sting and Ric Flair defeated Terry Funk and Great Muta in a thrilling cage match, with Brunno Sammartino as Special Guest Referee.
  • ~~~The Great Muta blamed Terry Funk for the loss and violently attacked him! Ric Flair and Sting made the save.
  • December 13, 1989 – Starrcade 89: The Great Muta lost matches to Ric Flair, Sting and Lex Luger (DQ) in the Iron Man tournament.
  • January 20, 1990: Arn Anderson defeated The Great Muta for the NWA World Television title.
  • February 6, 1990, Clash of The Champions X: Ric Flair, Ole and Arn Anderson defeated The Great Muta, Dragon Master and Buzz Sawyer in a Steel Cage Match.
  • The Great Muta left the NWA shortly thereafter.

Return to New Japan:

  • Keiji Mutoh returned to his homeland, ready to conquer Japan just as he did America.
  • April 27, 1990: Keiji Mutoh and Masahiro Chono defeated Masa Saito and Shin’ya Hashimoto to win the IWGP World Tag Team titles.
  • June, 1990: Keiji Mutoh and Masahiro Chono defeated Shin’ya Hashimoto and Masa Saito to retain the IWGP Tag Team Titles.
  • August 8, 1990: Keiji Mutoh and Masahiro Chono beat the Destruction Crew (Wayne Bloom and Mike Enos) to retain the IWGP Tag Team Titles.
  • September 14, 1990: Hiroshi Hase defeated The Great Muta (afterwards, a frustrated Muta delivered to Hase a Moonsault).
  • ~~~This started a bloody feud between Muta and Hase, but the two ended up Tag Team partners in the end.
  • September, 1990 – Inoki 30th Wrestling Anniversary: The Great Muta defeated Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat.
  • November 1, 1990: Hiroshi Hase and Kensuke Sasaki beat Keiji Mutoh and Masahiro Chono for the IWGP Tag Team titles.
  • December 13, 1990: Keiji Mutoh and Masahiro Chono defeated Bam Bam Bigelow and Bad News Allen.
  • December 16, 1990 – WCW Starrcade 90: The Great Muta and Mr. Saito participated in the Pat O’Connor Tag Team International Tournament as Team Japan, but they were defeated in the finals by the Steiner Brothers.
  • December 26, 1990 – Legends Show: The Great Muta defeated Tiger Jeet Singh by DQ.
  • March 21, 1991 ? NJPW/ WCW Starrcade in Tokyo Dome: The Great Muta defeated Sting.
  • ~~~Afterwards, Sting putted Muta in the Scorpion Deathlock until New Japan wrestlers made the save.
  • April, 1991: Scott Norton defeated Keiji Mutoh.
  • June 14, 1991 – WCW Clash of The Champions XV: Lex Luger defeated The Great Muta to retain the US Title.
  • July 19, 1991: Kensuke Sasaki and Hiroshi Hase beat The Great Muta and TNT (Savio Vega).
  • ~~~Muta left Hase as a bloody mess, product of his ruthless attacks.
  • August 9, 1991: Keiji Mutoh defeated Tatsumi Fujinami.
  • August 10, 1991: Keiji Mutoh defeated Big Van Vader in a thrilling match.
  • ~~~Vader then shook hands with Mutoh, as a sign of respect.
  • August 11, 1991 – G1 Climax Tournament: Masahiro Chono defeated Keiji Mutoh in a heart-shocking match to win the G1 Climax Tournament.
  • ~~~Afterwards, Shin’ya Hashimoto entered to the ring and celebrated the match with both Mutoh and Chono, “creating” the Three Musketeers of New Japan.
  • August 25, 1991: Super Strong Machine defeated The Great Muta by DQ, after Muta ripped Machine’s mask and started to choke him with it.
  • September 10, 1991: The Great Muta and Akira defeated Kim Duk and Masanobu Kurisu.
  • October, 1991: Keiji Mutoh and Hiroshi Hase competed in the Super Grade Tag Team League, which was won by Tatsumi Fujinami and Big Van Vader.
  • November 5, 1991- Budokan Hall Show: Keiji Mutoh and Hiroshi Hase defeated Rick Steiner and Scott Norton to win the IWGP Tag Team Titles.
  • The Great Muta and Sting reignited their feud, but soon found themselves teaming up against the Steiner Brothers in tag team matches.
  • January 4, 1992 ? NJPw/ WCW Starrcade in Tokyo Dome: The Great Muta and Sting defeated The Steiner Brothers.
  • March 1, 1992: Big Van Vader and Bam Bam Bigelow defeated Keiji Mutoh and Hiroshi Hase to win the IWGP Tag Team titles.
  • April 1992: Big Van Vader and Bam Bam Bigelow defeated Keiji Mutoh and Masahiro Chono to retain the IWGP Tag Team Titles.
  • May 17, 1992: Riki Choshu beat Keiji Mutoh to retain the IWGP Championship.
  • June, 1992: Keiji Mutoh and Hiroshi Hase defeated Takayuki Iizuka and The Black Cat.
  • August 6, 1992 – G1 Climax Tournament: Keiji Mutoh defeated Barry Windham and Steve Austin, but lost to Masahiro Chono in the semi-finals.
  • ~~~This tournament was made to crown the new NWA World Heavyweight Champion.

New Japan/WCW Relationship – IWGP Heavyweight Champion:

  • August 10, 1992: The Great Muta defeated Riki Choshu to become the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion.
  • August 12, 1992: The Steiner Brothers defeated Keiji Mutoh and Kensuke Sasaki.
  • September 9, 1992: The Great Muta beat Shin’ya Hashimoto at his first IWGP World title defense.
  • October 11, 1992: The Great Muta defeated Scott Norton to retain the IWGP Championship.
  • November 22, 1992: The Great Muta defeated Sting to retain the IWGP World title.
  • December 14, 1992: The Great Muta defeated Hiroshi Hase in the BLOODIEST MATCH in Pro-Wrestling history.
  • ~~~This match created the infamous “Muta Scale”, after Muta bled profusely when Hase poked his forehead a foreign object.
  • December 28, 1992 – WCW Starrcade: The Great Muta and Barry Windham defeated Brian Pillman and Too Cold Scorpio to qualify at the Battle Bowl.
  • ~~~Later that night, Masahiro Chono defeated The Great Muta to retain the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.
  • ~~~In the main event, The Great Muta won the Battle Bowl, earning a World Title shot.
  • January 4, 1993 ? NJPw/ WCW Super Show III: The Great Muta defeated Masahiro Chono to retain the IWGP Title and WIN the NWA World Title!
  • ~~~The Great Muta becomes first person to ever hold Japan and America’s top championships at the same time.
  • February 21, 1993 – WCW Super Brawl III: Barry Windham defeated The Great Muta for the NWA World Heavyweight title.
  • March 21, 1993: Keiji Mutoh defeated Power Warrior (Kensuke Sasaki).
  • ~~~Mutoh suffered a left-knee injury during the match.
  • May 3, 1993 – NJPW Wrestling Dontaku: Hulk Hogan (WWF World Champion) defeated The Great Muta (IWGP Champion) in a non-title match.
  • May 25, 1993 – Wrestling Association R: The Great Kabuki defeated The Great Muta by DQ.
  • June 15, 1993: The Great Muta defeated The Great Kabuki via DQ, to retain the IWGP Championship.
  • June 17, 1993: The Great Muta defeated Ashura Hara.
  • August, 1993 – G1 Climax Tournament: Keiji Mutoh defeated The Great Kabuki and Super Strong Machine to advance, but lost to Tatsumi Fujinami in the semi-finals.
  • September 20, 1993: Shin’ya Hashimoto defeated The Great Muta to win the IWGP World Heavyweight title!
  • September 23, 1993: Hulk Hogan and The Great Muta defeated The Hell Raisers (Hawk and Kensuke Sasaki).

New Japan Pro-Wrestling – Keiji Mutoh:

  • Keiji Mutoh started to fight more often as himself, keeping The Great Muta persona for very special matches.
  • December 10, 1993: Shin’ya Hashimoto beat Keiji Mutoh to retain the IWGP World title.
  • January 4, 1994 – Battlefield in Tokyo Dome: The Steiner Brothers defeated Keiji Mutoh and Hiroshi Hase.
  • April 4, 1994: The Great Muta and Masahiro Chono defeated Genichiro Tenryu and Riki Choshu.
  • ~~~ Originally this match was: Keiji Mutoh and Chono vs. Tenryu and Choshu, but Genichiro provoked Mutoh until he went to the backstage and returned as The Great Muta.
  • April 7, 1994: Riki Choshu and Yoshiaki Fujiwara defeated The Great Muta and Hiroshi Hase by DQ, during the whole match Muta and Hase couldn’t work together.
  • ~~~Afterwards, Muta started to attack everybody as result of his frustration.
  • April 17, 1994 – WCW Spring Stampede: Steve Austin defeated The Great Muta by DQ to retain the US Title, Muta was disqualified for tossing Austin over the top rope.
  • May 1, 1994 – Wrestling Dontaku 94: Antonio Inoki defeated The Great Muta in the beginning of Inoki’s Final Countdown.
  • June, 1994: Keiji Mutoh and Masahiro Chono defeated Scott Norton and Mike Enoss.
  • June 12, 1994: Keiji Mutoh beat Tatsumi Fujinami.
  • August 4, 1994 – Yokohama Show: Masahiro Chono defeated The Great Muta.
  • August 5, 1994: Keiji Mutoh defeated Riki Choshu.
  • August 6, 1994: Keiji Mutoh took out Osamu Kido.
  • August 7, 1994: Keiji Mutoh beat Yoshiaki Yatsu.
  • September 3, 1994 – G1 Climax Tournament: Yoshiaki Fujiwara defeated The Great Muta.
  • September 26, 1994: The Great Muta defeated Osamu Kido in a bloodbath.
  • ~~~When they were fighting in the ring side, Muta went berserk and started to attack everybody around him.
  • November 25, 1994: Keiji Mutoh and Hiroshi Hase beat the Hell Raisers to become IWGP Tag Team Champions!
  • January 4, 1995 – Battle 7: Keiji Mutoh and Hiroshi Hase defeated The Steiner Brothers to retain the IWGP Tag Team titles.

New Japan Pro-Wrestling – War against UWFI (IWGP Heavyweight Champion II):

  • May 3, 1995 – Wrestling Dontaku 95: Keiji Mutoh defeated Shin’ya Hashimoto to win his second IWGP World Heavyweight title.
  • May 11, 1995: Keiji Mutoh and Hiroshi Hase vacated the IWGP Tag Title belts so Mutoh could concentrate on defending his newly won World title.
  • May, 1995 – NJPW vs UWFI in Tokyo Dome: The Great Muta defeated Nobuhiko Takada to unify the IWGP and UWFI World titles.
  • WCW Slamboree 95: The Great Muta defeated “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Ondorff to retain the IWGP World Title.
  • June 14, 1995: Keiji Mutoh defeated Hiroyoshi Tenzan to retain the IWGP World title.
  • June 15, 1995: The Great Muta defeated The Great Kabuki.
  • July 13, 1995: Keiji Mutoh beat Road Warrior Hawk to retain the IWGP title.
  • August 11, 1995: Shiro Koshinaka beat Keiji Mutoh in a non-title match.
  • August 12, 1995: Keiji Mutoh defeated Masahiro Chono to retain the IWGP Title.

  • January 4, 1996 – Wrestling War: Nobuhiko Takada defeated Keiji Mutoh by submission to win the IWGP World Heavyweight Title!
  • March 1996 – UWFI Budokan Hall Show: Keiji Mutoh defeated Naoki Sano by submission.
  • April 29, 1996 – Battle Formation 96: The Great Muta defeated Hakushi Jinzei in a bloodbath.
  • April 30, 1996: Keiji Mutoh and Jushin Thunder Liger beat Nobuhiko Takada and Naoki Sano.
  • June, 1996 – Rikidozan Memorial Show: Keiji Mutoh and Kensuke Sasaki beat Junji Hirata and Shin’ya Hashimoto.
  • August 2, 1996: Kazuo Yamazaki defeated Keiji Mutoh by submission.
  • August 3, 1996: Keiji Mutoh defeated Satoshi Kojima.
  • August 5, 1996: Keiji Mutoh beat Shiro Koshinaka.
  • August 6, 1996 – G1 Climax Tournament: Masahiro Chono beat Keiji Mutoh.
  • September, 1996: Keiji Mutoh and Sting won over The Road Warriors.
  • September 23, 1996: Keiji Mutoh defeated Pedro Octavio by KO.
  • October 11, 1996 – WAR Osaka Crush Night: Genichiro Tenryu beat The Great Muta to retain the IWGP World title.
  • October 20, 1996: The Great Muta defeated Jushin Thunder Liger.
  • ~~~In one point of the match, Muta ripped Liger’s mask off, unleashing the Dark side of Liger!!!
  • November 1, 1996 – Super Grade Tag Team League VI: Shin’ya Hashimoto and Scott Norton beat Keiji Mutoh and Rick Steiner in the finals to win the tournament.
  • Keiji Mutoh then took time off due to a knee injury.

New Japan Pro-Wrestling and WCW – new World order Japan:

  • Once Keiji Mutoh returned from his injury, Masahiro Chono and nWo Japan focused their efforts on recruiting him and his alter ego, The Great Muta.
  • January 4, 1997 – Wrestling World: Power Warrior (Kensuke Sasaki) defeated The Great Muta.
  • January, 1997: Keiji Mutoh defeated ???
  • ~~~ After his victory, nWo gundam members approached to Keiji Mutoh to offer him to join to them.
  • February 16, 1997: The Great Muta defeated Shiro Koshinaka.
  • ~~~ At the very start of the match, Muta spewed Green Mist on a Heisei Ishigun’s flag!
  • ~~~ After the match, Masahiro Chono, Scott Norton and Buff Bagwell hit the ring and offered Muta to join the nWo, but Muta left the ring with no answer.
  • March, 1997: Keiji Mutoh approached to nWo Japan members, apparently to join them. But he attacked Masahiro Chono out of nowhere and left the ring.
  • ~~~ On backstage, Scott Norton and Buff Bagwell vowed revenge on Mutoh.
  • March 20, 1997: nWo Japan (Masahiro Chono, Hiroyoshi, Tenzan, Scott Norton, nWo Sting and Buff Bagwell) beat New Japan Army (Shin’ya Hashimoto, Keiji Mutoh, Kensuke Sasaki, Manabu Nakanishi and Steven Regal) when Mutoh accidentally cost the victory of his team.
  • April 4, 1997 – NJPW Battle Formation: The Great Muta defeated Masahiro Chono, strangely Muta and Chono shook hands after the match, spreading confusion about Muta’s true colors.
  • May 3, 1997 – Strong Style Evolution: Masahiro Chono and The Outsiders beat Keiji Mutoh and The Steiner Brothers.
  • May 26, 1997 – WCW Nitro: The Great Muta vs. Masahiro Chono went to no contest when Muta and Chono attacked Sonny Ono.
  • ~~~ Finally Chono revealed that The Great Muta had joined the nWo!!! (However, Keiji Mutoh declared his loyalty to New Japan)
