Career History

In the Beginning:

  • Davey Boy Smith began his training at the very young age of 14, under the guidance of Ted Betley, in his native country of England.
  • Davey Boy Smith (aged 17) was wrestling all over the United Kingdom, as well as Germany and Japan.
  • Davey Boy Smith brought to North America by his cousin, Tom Billington (aka the Dynamite Kid).

Stampede Wrestling:

  • Davey Boy Smith joined Stu Hart’s Calgary-based Stampede Wrestling promotion.
  • Davey Boy Smith and Dynamite Kid engaged in a feud for several months before forming a tag team.
  • During this time, Davey Boy Smith met his future wife, and daughter of Stu Hart – – Miss Diana Hart.
  • Davey Boy Smith and Dynamite Kid became a tremendous team, and split their time between Stampede and New Japan Pro Wrestling.
  • 1985: Vince McMahon struck a deal with Stu Hart to buy Stampede and wanted Bret Hart, Jim Neidhart, Davey Boy and Dynamite Kid.
  • ~~~(Side note: Vince McMahon failed to make payments to the Hart Family and the deal was never finalized).

World Wrestling Federation – The British Bulldogs:

  • Davey Boy Smith and Dynamite Kid would become known as the British Bulldogs and managed by Capt. Lou Albano.
  • January 2, 1986 – TNT: The British Bulldogs had a tea party with Mr. Fuji and Moondog Spot (Spot destroyed set).
  • March 1, 1986 – SNME: Brutus Beefcake and Greg Valentine defeated The British Bulldogs to retain the Tag Team titles.
  • April 5, 1986 – WrestleMania II: The Bulldogs w/Ozzy Osborne defeated Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake to win the Tag Titles!
  • May 3, 1986 – SNME: The British Bulldogs defeated The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff to retain the Tag Team titles.
  • September 7, 1986 – Wrestling Challenge: Tag team champions The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & The Dynamite Kid) defeated The Moondogs (Moondog Rex & Moondog Spike) to retain the titles.
  • September 13, 1986 – Superstars: Tag team champions The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & The Dynamite Kid) defeated Jack Foley & Les Thornton to retain the titles.
  • September 28, 1986 – Wrestling Challenge: Nikolai Volkoff & The Iron Sheik defeated The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & The Dynamite Kid).
  • October 4, 1986 – SNME: The British Bulldogs defeated Brutus Beefcake and Greg Valentine to retain the Tag Team titles.
  • October 11, 1986 – Wrestling Challenge: Tag team champions The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & The Dynamite Kid) defeated The Dream Team (Brutus Beefcake & Greg Valentine) by disqualification to retain the titles.
  • October 19, 1986 – Wrestling Challenge: Tag team champions The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & The Dynamite Kid) defeated Rudy Diamond & Steve Regal to retain the titles.
  • November 8, 1986 – Superstars: Tag team champions The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & The Dynamite Kid) defeated Dave Wagner & Rick Renslow to retain the titles.
  • November 16, 1986 – Wrestling Challenge: Captain Lou Albano & The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & The Dynamite Kid) defeated Johnny V & The Dream Team (Brutus Beefcake & Greg Valentine).
  • November 29, 1986 – Superstars: The Hart Foundation (Bret Hart & Jim Neidhart) defeated The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & The Dynamite Kid).
  • December 7, 1986 – Wrestling Challenge: Butch Reed, Nikolai Volkoff & The Iron Sheik defeated Billy Jack Haynes & The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & The Dynamite Kid).
  • Late 1986: The Dynamite Kid severly injured his back, so they needed a plan to get the titles of the Bulldogs.
  • December 21, 1986 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & The Dynamite Kid) & The Junkyard Dog defeated Moondog Spot & The Dream Team (Brutus Beefcake & Greg Valentine).
  • January 1987: The Hart Foundation (Jim Neidhart and Bret Hart) defeated The British Bulldogs for the Tag Team titles.
  • ~~~WWF management decided to hide Dynamite’s injured back by having one of the Harts attack him before the match.
  • ~~~The Dynamite Kid was laid out and stayed outside on the floor for the entire match.
  • ~~~Davey Boy Smith, left to fend for himself, was pinned for the titles in the ring.
  • The British Bulldogs took some time off to get Dynamite’s back in shape, but they came back too quickly.
  • January 10, 1987 – Superstars: Nikolai Volkoff & The Iron Sheik defeated The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & The Dynamite Kid) by disqualification.
  • March 21, 1987 – Superstars: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & The Dynamite Kid) & Tito Santana defeated Al Navarro, Rick Renslow & Steve Lombardi.
  • March 29, 1987 – WrestleMania III: The Hart Foundation and Danny Davis defeated The British Bulldogs and Tito Santana.
  • April 12, 1987 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & The Dynamite Kid) & Tito Santana defeated Barry O, Jimmy Jack Funk & The Gladiator.
  • May 2, 1987 – SNME: The British Bulldogs defeated The Hart Foundation (Tag Team Champions).
  • ~~~The Bulldogs won the 2/3 Falls match in two straight falls but since the first was by DQ the titles did not change.
  • May 3, 1987 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Rick Gantner and Rocky Stone.
  • October 18, 1987 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Brian Costello and Chris Oliver.
  • November 26, 1987 – Survivor Series: The British Bulldogs participated in a huge 10-Team Elimination match.
  • ~~~Team #1: The British Bulldogs, The Rougeau Brothers, The Young Stallions, The Killer Bees and Strike Force.
  • ~~~Team #2: Demolition, The Hart Foundation, The Bolshavics, The Islanders and Dream Team II (Team #1 WON).
  • The British Bulldogs took some more time off so that so Dynamite Kid could rehabilitate his injured back properly.
  • Late 1987: The British Bulldogs returned with their mascot, Matilda, who was dognapped by the Islanders!
  • November 8, 1987 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated The Dream Team (Dino Bravo and Greg Valentine) by disqualification.
  • November 21, 1987 – Superstars: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Dusty Wolfe and The Gladiator.
  • November 29, 1987 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Los Conquistadores (Conquistador Dos and Conquistador Uno).
  • December 5, 1987 – Superstars: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Barry Horowitz and Steve Lombardi.
  • December 26, 1987 – Superstars: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) vs. The Islanders (Haku and Tama) ended in a no contest.
  • January 16, 1988 – Superstars: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Brian Costello and Gino Carabello.
  • January 31, 1988 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Barry Horowitz and Dusty Wolfe.
  • February 13, 1988 – Superstars: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated The Red Demon and Van Van Horne.

  • March 27, 1988 – WrestleMania IV: The Islanders and Bobby Heenan defeated The British Bulldogs and Koko B. Ware.
  • April 10, 1988 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Iron Mike Sharpe and Terry Gibbs.
  • April 16, 1988 – Superstars: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Barry Horowitz and Dusty Wolfe.
  • April 30, 1988 – Summerslam: Demolition (Ax and Smash) defeated The British Bulldogs by DQ to retain the Tag Team titles.
  • May 8, 1988 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Randy Brian and Steve Lombardi.
  • June 18, 1988 – Superstars: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Barry Horowitz and Terry Gibbs.
  • June 26, 1988 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Barry Horowitz and Steve Lombardi.
  • July 9, 1988 – Superstars: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Dusty Wolfe and Gino Carabello.
  • July 10, 1988 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Terry Gibbs and Tommy Angel.
  • July 31, 1988 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Los Conquistadores (Conquistador Dos and Conquistador Uno).
  • July 31, 1988 – WrestleFest: Demolition (Ax and Smash) defeated The British Bulldogs to retain the Tag Team titles.
  • Legitimate backstage heat began to develope between the British Bulldogs and The Rougeau Brothers.
  • August 13, 1988 – Superstars: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Chris Curtis and Tom Burton.
  • August 28, 1988 – Summerslam: The British Bulldogs vs The Rougeau Brothers ended in a time limit draw.
  • September 10, 1988 – Superstars: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Gene Ligon and Rusty Riddle.
  • September 18, 1988 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated George South and Trent Knight.
  • October 1, 1988 – Superstars: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated John Ziegler and Trent Knight.
  • October 9, 1988 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) defeated Barry Horowitz. and George South.
  • November 24, 1988 – Survivor Series: The British Bulldogs participated in a huge 10-Team Elimination match.
  • ~~~Team #1: The Powers of Pain, The Rockers, The Young Stallions, The British Bulldogs and The Hart Foundation.
  • ~~~Team #2: Deamolition, The Brain Busters, The Rougeau Brothers, The Bolshiviks, The Conquistators.
  • ~~~The Rougeaus were eliminated early, so they could get backstage and leave the building as fast as possible.

Back to Stampede:

  • December 1988: The British Bulldogs headed back to Stu Hart’s Stampede Wrestling in Calgary.
  • The British Bulldogs quickly won the International Tag Team titles.
  • The British Bulldogs lost the titles a few days later, due to interference by Davey Boy’s “cousin”, Johnny Smith.
  • ~~~Dynamite Kid blamed Davey Boy Smith for the loss, and a violent feud erupted between the two.
  • March 24, 1989: Davey Boy Smith defeated Don Muraco for the Stampede North American Heavyweight title.
  • July 4, 1989: Davey Boy Smith and Jason the Terrible and Chris Benoit were injured in a head-on automobile accident in Jasper.
  • ~~~Davey suffered a cracked vertebrae in his back and needed 100 stitches in his head after being thrown through the windshield.
  • ~~~Jason suffers 2 fractures in his left leg and Benoit suffers an injured right knee.

World Wrestling Federation – The British Bulldog:

  • 1990: Davey Boy Smith briefly toured Europe and Japan before returning to the World Wrestling Federation.
  • Davey Boy Smith had trademarked the “British Bulldog” name and used it in his singles career.
  • October 27, 1990 – Superstars: The British Bulldog defeated The Brooklyn Brawler.
  • November 4, 1990 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldog defeated Pez Whatley.
  • November 24, 1990 – Superstars: The British Bulldog defeated Paul Diamond.
  • December 2, 1990 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldog defeated Iron Mike Sharpe.
  • December 16, 1990 – Wrestling Challenge: The British Bulldog defeated Scott Colontonio.
  • December 22, 1990 – Superstars: The British Bulldog defeated Chris Duffy.
  • January 12, 1991 – Superstars: The British Bulldog defeated Tom Bennett.
  • January 19, 1991 – Royal Rumble: The British Bulldog entered at #14 but was eliminated by Earthquake.

  • September 26, 1998 – Saturday Night: Stevie Ray and Vincent defeated The British Bulldog and Jim Neidhart.

  • October 18, 1998 – WCW Monday NITRO: Fit Finlay defeated Davey Boy Smith.
  • ~~~Davey was injured in the ring after landing hard on a trap door constructed for the Warrior.
  • ~~~Davey Boy’s injury turned out as a spinal infection in which the discs in his back were basically disappearing in a sea of infection.
  • ~~~He spent six months laid up in the hospital, before receiving his WCW notice of release via FedEx.

World Wrestling Federation:

  • While recovering, Davey had several conversations with Owen Hart (still in the WWF) about returning to the Fed.
  • After Owen’s tragic death, the Bulldog was intent on returning to the WWF to preserve the memory of his brother-in-law.
  • August 1999: The British Bulldog once again signed with the World Wrestling Federation.
  • September 9, 1999 – Smackdown!: The British Bulldog beat The Big Bossman to win the Hardcore Title, and gave it to Al Snow.
  • The British Bulldog made it clear it was his goal to win the Heavyweight title.
  • The British Bulldog turned heel, turning on The Rock in a match where the Bulldog was the referee.
  • September 23, 1999 – SmackDown: Triple H defeated The Rock in a Brahma Bull Strap Match with The British Bulldow as referee (Bulldog turned heel and helped Triple H win).
  • September 26, 1999 – Unforgiven: Triple H defeated The Rock and The Big Show and Kane and Mankind and British Bulldog!
  • ~~~The British Bulldog whacked The Rock with a chair | Triple H pinned The Rock to retain the WWF Title!
  • September 27, 1999 – RAW: Triple H vs The Rock ended in a No Contest when The British Bulldog interfered.

  • April 13, 2000 – Jakked: The British Bulldog defeated Mideon in a dark match.
  • May 6, 2000 – Insurrextion: The British Bulldog defeated Crash to win the hardcore title.
  • May 11, 2000 – Smackdown!: The British Bulldog vs. Hardcore Holly ended in a no contest.
  • May 21, 2000 – HEAT: The British Bulldog defeated Joey Abs.
  • May 27, 2000 – Jakked: The British Bulldog defeated Mideon.
  • May 27, 2000 – House Show: The British Bulldog defeated Steve Blackman.
  • May 28, 2000 – HEAT: European champion Eddie Guerrero vs. The British Bulldog ended in a double disqualification to retain the title.
  • From there, Davey’s drug problem got worse, and Vince requested that Davey go into rehab, at McMahons expense.
  • Davey Boy Smith seemed to be on the right track at times, but could not deal with the struggle of rehab.
  • Davey Boy Smith’s troubles mounted when he ‘reportedly’ threatened to kill his estranged wife and one of her sisters.
  • Davey Boy Smith and Diana got a divorce soon after and was released from the WWF after one too many second chances.
  • May 10, 2002 – TRCW: Davey Boy Smith and Harry Smith defeated Rob Stardom and Ryan Wood.
  • May 11, 2002 – TRCW: Davey Boy Smith, Harry Smith and Zack Mercury defeated Robby Royce, The Axe and TJ Bratt.

The Death of Davey Boy Smith:

  • Tom “Dynamite Kid” Billington despised his cousin Davey Boy Smith so much, he can’t bring himself to say his name.
  • May 18, 2002: Tragically Davey Boy Smith died of a heart attack while on vacation in British Columbia with his girlfriend.
  • Davey’s son “Harry Smith” is following his father footsteps wrestling professionally in Stampede Wrestling.
  • March 18, 2004: Davey Boy Smith’s autopsy results were made public by the coroner of British Columbia, Shawn Jestley.
  • ~~~Investigation revealed, that in his profession, Mr. Smith had used anabolic steroids in the past.
  • ~~~Injectable anabolic steroid and paraphernalia was seized by the coroner | Analysis of the steroid revealed trenbolone acetate.
  • ~~~The above described changes in the fibrous connective tissues are consistent with previous anabolic steroid use.

 

  • April 2021: The British Bulldog was inducted in the 2020 WWE hall of fame.
