In The Beginning:

  • Paul Taylor went to Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he majored in economics.
  • Terry Taylor formed a tag team with Andre the Giant early in his career.
  • Terry Taylor was a popular fan favorite for much of his early career in the Mid-South region, as well as the Mid-Atlantic in the 1980’s.
  • Terry Taylor was originally selected to be part of The Fabulous Ones tag team with Stan Lane, but that role went to Florida wrestler, Steve Keirn.
  • Terry Taylor then formed a tag team with Bobby Fulton called the Fantastic Ones. After they split up, Fulton teamed with Tommy Rogers to form The Fantastics.

National Wrestling Alliance:

  • Terry Taylor made his way to Mid-South in January 1984 and feuded with the team of Nikolai Volkoff and Krusher Darsow. Darsow changed his name to Krusher Khruschev, and he and Taylor met in the finals of a May tournament to crown the first ever Mid-South TV champion, which Khruschev won.
  • 45 days later, Terry Taylor defeated Khruschev in New Orleans to begin his first of four TV title reigns.
  • Terry Taylor feuded with “Nature Boy” Buddy Landel over the NWA National Heavyweight Championship in 1985.
  • On March 13 of that year, Terry Taylor defeated Ted DiBiase for the North American Heavyweight Championship, the Mid South region’s top title at the time.
  • November 28, 1985 – Starrcade: Buddy Landell defeated Terry Taylor to win the National heavyweight title.
  • April 19, 1986 – Crockett Cup: Terry Taylor teamed with Steve “Dr. Death” Williams for the Tag Team tournament.

Universal Wrestling Federation:

  • Moving back to the Mid-South region in 1986 (which had since broken away from the NWA and been renamed the Universal Wrestling Federation {UWF), Terry Taylor became one of the promotion’s biggest stars and defeated Buzz Sawyer for the UWF Television Championship in May.
  • May 3, 1986 – UWF: Jack Victory defeated Terry Taylor.
  • June 7, 1986 – UWF: Terry Taylor defeated Buzz Sawyer to win the TV title.
  • June 13, 1986 – UWF: UWF heavyweight champion Terry Gordy defeated Terry Taylor to retain the title.
  • June 14, 1986 – UWF: UWF TV champion Terry Taylor defeated Buzz Sawyer to retain the title.
  • November 27, 1986 – UWF: Terry Taylor defeated Buddy Roberts in a barbed wired match.
  • Terry Taylor won the UWF Tag Team Championship with “Gentleman” Chris Adams in early 1987, before breaking up their “Dream Team” to begin a heated rivalry.
  • April 11, 1987 – UWF: UWF tag team champions Terry Taylor and Eddie Gilbert defeated Sting and Rick Steiner to retain the titles.
  • August 1, 1987 – UWF: Terry Taylor defeated Steve Cox.
  • September 11, 1987 – UWF: Steve Williams and Sting defeated Terry Taylor and Eddie Gilbert in a steel cage match.
  • September 23, 1987 – MACW: Terry Taylor and Eddie Gilbert defeated Sting and Shane Douglas.
  • September 24, 1987 – MACW: UWF TV champion Terry Taylor defeated Shane Douglas to retain the title.
  • September 25, 1987 – MACW: UWF TV champion Terry Taylor defeated Brad Armstrong to retain the title.
  • After Jim Crockett Promotions took over the UWF later that year, Terry Taylor (then the UWF Television Champion) initiated a dispute with Nikita Koloff over the NWA World Television Championship by stealing Koloff’s belt, which led to a unification match of the two titles at Starrcade 1987, which Taylor would lose before abruptly leaving the promotion.

World Class Championship Wrestling:

  • November 26, 1987 – NWA Starrcade: NWA world TV champion Nikolai Volkoff defeated Terry Taylor to retain the TV title and to win the UWF TV title to unify the titles.
  • In early 1988, Terry Taylor debuted in World Class Championship Wrestling, where he and Adams continued their feud until early June. Taylor won the Texas Heavyweight Championship from Matt Borne and defended it against Adams, Kevin Von Erich, and others.
  • Terry Taylor also held the tag team title with Iceman King Parsons for a short time. Taylor eventually departed WCCW when his feud with Von Erich was about to kick into high gear.
  • March 6, 1988 – WCWA: Terry Taylor defeated Jeff Raitz to retain the Texas heavyweight title.
  • May 8, 1988 – Parade of Champions: Terry Taylor defeated Chris Adams to retain the Texas heavyweight title.

World Wrestling Federation:

  • 1988: Terry Taylor entered the World Wrestling Federation using the name “Scary” Terry Taylor.
  • Terry Taylor was originally considered for the Mr. Perfect gimmick, but it was given to Curt Hennig.
  • July 30, 1988 – Superstars: Los Conquistadors defeated Terry Taylor and Sam Houston in a dark match.
  • July 31, 1988 – WrestleFest 1988: Curt Hennig defeated Terry Taylor in a match that preceeded their “gimmicks”.
  • WWF Superstars of Wrestling: Terry Taylor took Bobby Heenan as him manager and defeated “Leaping” Lanny Poffo.
