Career Highlights

In The Beginning:

  • 1969: Jimmy Snuka mades his pro wrestling debut under the name Jimmy Kealoha wrestling in Hawaii.

Pacific Northwest Wrestling:

  • Jimmy Snuka moved on to Don Owen’s NWA: Pacific Northwest territory and quickly established himself as a huge fan favourite.
  • Jimmy Snuka formed a tag team with Dutch Savage and together they became six-time NWA Northwest Tag Team Champions.
  • Jimmy Snuka and Dutch Savage feuded with Jesse Ventura and Buddy Rogers over the Tag Team titles.
  • ~~~A singles rivalry between Jimmy Snuka and Jesse Ventura outgrew their respective tag team brawls.
  • Jesse Ventura reminisced over his rivalry with Jimmy Snuka at the WWE Hall of Fame ceremonies in 2004.
  • ~~~Ventura praised Snuka as a wise, selfless professional and credited Snuka’s fan base which helped strengthen their rivalry.
  • November 16, 1973: Jimmy Snuka defeated Bull Ramos to win his first NWA Pacific Northwest title.
  • Jimmy Snuka ended up holding the NWA Pacific Northwest Heavyweight title on six separate occasions.

Texas:

  • May 27, 1977 – NWA Texas: Jimmy Snuka won the Texas Heavyweight title.
  • Jimmy Snuka also wrestled in Japan, where he teamed regularly with Bruiser Brody.
  • Jimmy Snuka’s finishing move, the Superfly body splash became famous, that many promoters lifted their top rope ban.
  • August 1977: Jimmy Snuka and Gino Hernandez defeated Bruiser Brody and Mike York to win the Texas Tag Team titles.

Mid-Atlantic Wrestling:

  • Jimmy Snuka settled down in NWA Mid-Atlantic, where he became a villain for the first time!
  • Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka and Paul “Mr. Wonderful” Orndorff formed a successful tag team partnership.
  • December 1978: Jimmy Snuka and Paul Orndorff defeated Baron von Raschke and Greg Valentine to win the Tag Team titles.
  • Jimmy Snuka was later managed by “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers.
  • September 1, 1979: Jimmy Snuka defeated Ricky Steamboat in the Tournament Final to win the vacant United States title.
  • June 22, 1980: Jimmy Snuka and Ray Stevens defeated Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood to win the Tag Team titles.

World Wide Wrestling Federation:

  • Jimmy Snuka was also making appearances in New York for Vince McMahon Sr’s WWWF which was part of the NWA.
  • November 5, 1978: Jimmy Snuka and Paul Orndorff defeated Sgt. Jacques Goulet and Rudy Kay.
  • March 25, 1979 : Jimmy Snuka and Paul Orndorff defeated Ken Patera and Big John Studd to retain the NWA Tag Team titles.
  • November 4, 1979: Jimmy Snuka defeated Ric Flair to retain the NWA United States title.
  • November 18, 1979: Dewey Robertson (Canadian Champion) defeated Jimmy Snuka (NWA United States Champion).
  • December 30, 1979: Jimmy Snuka and Ray Stevens defeated Dewey Robertson and Ric Flair.

Georgia Championship Wrestling:

  • July 6, 1981: Jimmy Snuka and Terry Gordy defeated Ted DiBiase and Steve O to win the NWA National Tag Team titles.
  • July 4, 1982 – Georgia Championship Wrestling: Paul Orndorff defeated Jimmy Snuka by disqualification to retain the NWA National Title.

World Wrestling Federation – Heel:

  • 1982: Jimmy Snuka joined the World Wrestling Federation as a heel, managed by Captain Lou Albano.
  • Jimmy Snuka was now showcasing his talent to a larger and a more culturally diverse audience.
  • ~~~His unique wrestling style set a new standard of wrestling ability in the WWF.
  • ~~~He would also be the focus of some the most memorable events in the company’s history.
  • ~~~His tremendous speed, power and agility, combined with a fearless array of aerial tactics left many fans in awe.
  • ~~~He also popularised his finishing move, the “Superfly” top rope body splash.
  • March 12, 1982 – All Star Wrestling: Jimmy Snuka defeated Barry Hart in his WWF debut match.
  • Jimmy Snuka feuded with WWF Champion Bob Backlund, including a classic Steel Cage match.
  • April 26, 1982: Jimmy Snuka (MSG debut) defeated Bob Backlund (WWF Champion) by disqualification when Backlund refused to break a choke.
  • May 22, 1982: Jimmy Snuka defeated Intercontinental Champion Pedro Morales by disqualification.
  • June 5, 1982: Jimmy Snuka defeated WWF Champion Bob Backlund by count-out.
  • June 28, 1982 – MSG: Bob Backlund defeated Jimmy Snuka in a famous “Steel Cage” match to retain the WWF title.
  • ~~~The Snuka/Backlund rivalry reached its peak, when Jimmy Snuka attempted his Superfly splash off the top of the cage!
  • ~~~Backlund, however, rolled out of the way in time as Jimmy Snuka came crashing down to the mat.
  • ~~~This would be the first of many unforgettable moments in Jimmy Snuka’s illustrious career.
  • ~~~The match itself was voted Pro Wrestling Illustrated Match of the Year in 1982.
  • August 2, 1982 – MSG: Jimmy Snuka defeated Intercontinental Champion Pedro Morales by count-out.
  • August 22, 1982 – Toronto: Bob Backlund defeated Jimmy Snuka in a Steel Cage match to retain the WWF title.
  • September 18, 1982: Bob Backlund defeated Jimmy Snuka to retain the WWF World title.
  • ~~~After the match, Backlund and Snuka shook hands, ending one of the greatest feuds in WWE history.
  • October 5, 1982: Jimmy Snuka and Lou Albano were guest of Buddy Rogers’ Corner interview segment.
  • October 8, 1982: Jimmy Snuka defeated Curt Hennig.

World Wrestling Federation – Babyface:

  • Jimmy Snuka turned face when Buddy Roger’s uncovered that Lou Albano was ripping Snuka off in the payoff.
  • ~~~Buddy Rogers began managing Jimmy Snuka, and then feuded with Ray Stevens, Lou Albano, and Fred Blassie.
  • November 12, 1982: Jimmy Snuka defeated Capt. Lou Albano at 4:50 when the referee stopped the match due to blood.
  • November 22, 1982: Jimmy Snuka defeated Capt. Lou Albano in 6 minutes.
  • November 25, 1982: Jimmy Snuka and Buddy Rogers defeated Cpt. Lou Albano and Ray Stevens.

  • June 10, 1983: Jimmy Snuka and Chief Jay Strongbow defeated The Wild Samoans.
  • September 17, 1983: Jimmy Snuka and Buddy Rogers defeated Intercontinental Champion Don Muraco and Capt. Lou Albano.
  • October 22, 1983: Jimmy Snuka wrestled Intercontinental Champion Don Muraco in a “Strap Match” (result unknown).
  • October 17, 1983: Don Muraco defeated Jimmy Snuka in a “Steel Cage” Match to retain the IC championship.

  • November 1983: Jimmy Snuka defeated Sgt. Slaughter in a “Steel Cage” Match.

  • February 18, 1984: Andre the Giant and Jimmy Snuka defeated Sgt. Slaughter and David Schultz by disqualification.

  • August 25, 1984: Roddy Piper defeated Jimmy Snuka by count-out (Piper ‘broke’ Snuka’s neck during the match).
  • Jimmy Snuka enlisted the help of the Tonga Kid that resulted in tag matches against Piper, Bob Orton and Paul Orndorff.
  • December 28, 1984: Jimmy Snuka and The Tonga Kid vs Roddy Piper and Bob Orton Jr ended in a no contest.
  • January 12, 1985: Roddy Piper and Bob Ortan Jr. battled Jimmy Snuka and Tony Atlas to a double disqualification.
  • January 21, 1985: Roddy Piper and Bob Orton Jr. defeated Jimmy Snuka and Junk Yard Dog in a “Texas Tornado” Match.
  • February 18, 1985 – War to Settle The Score: Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka defeated “Cowboy” Bob Orton Jr.

  • Jimmy Snuka’s character appeared on the cartoon “Hulk Hogan’s Rock ‘n Wrestling”.
  • 1985: Jimmy Snuka also briefly teamed with Ricky Steamboat to form the “South Pacific Connection”.
  • April 24, 1985: Jimmy Snuka and Ricky Steamboat defeated Nikolai Volkoff and the Iron Sheik by count-out.
  • April 27, 1985: Ricky Steamboat and Jimmy Snuka won a Tag Team Battle Royale.
  • May 3, 1985: Ricky Steamboat and Jimmy Snuka defeated Roddy Piper and Bob Orton Jr. by disqualification.
  • May 4, 1985: Hulk Hogan and Jimmy Snuka defeated Roddy Piper and Bob Orton Jr.

  • Jimmy Snuka was unable to capture any titles in the WWF, and had a falling out with the company that led to his leaving.

  • Jimmy Snuka resurfaced in Verne Gagne’s AWA (American Wrestling Association).
  • April 20, 1986 – AWA WrestleRock: Jimmy Snuka and Greg Gagne defeated Nord the Barbarian and Bruiser Brody in a Cage.
  • May 2, 1987 – SuperClash II: Jimmy Snuka and Russ Francis defeated The Terrorist (Brian Knobbs) and The Mercenary (Ron Fuller).
  • June 28, 1986 – AWA Battle by the Bay: Jimmy Snuka defeated Jay York.
  • Jimmy Snuka began a bitter rivalry with Col DeBeers after DeBeers piledrove Snuka on the unforgiving concrete floor!
  • December 25, 1986 – AWA Brawl in St. Paul: Jimmy Snuka defeated Col. DeBeers by Count Out.
